Maternity Clothes Question for Already Mommies

I will be going on a vacation to new orleans in July, at which time I will be in between 13 and 14 weeks with my first pregnancy. All my summer clothes are going to be too small on me as I have been bloated since a week before I knew I was pregnant. I am already one size larger and all my clothes are uncomfortable!
Should I try to buy some maternity clothes for this trip...or should I just buy some loose fitting summer wardrobe and hang on as long as possible in regular clothes. I am curious to see if I will even fit into maternity clothes by then.
Thanks for the help

Re: Maternity Clothes Question for Already Mommies

  • I would just go up another size for now. At 13-14 weeks, maternity clothes will be too big.

Plus if you buy maternity clothes now, they probably won't last your entire pregnancy.

  • Just get some flowy, stretchy dresses and skirts.  Comfy, cool, and you can use them next year.

  • I'm a first time mom but I bought maternity stuff at 10 1/2 weeks and I am soo much more comfortable in the maternity stuff.  I had clothes that were one size bigger (shorts and jeans when I was heavier pre-pregnancy but they just don't feel right). For shirts - I just went up one size, but for the bottoms I went maternity.  I know a lot of people say don't spend a lot of money on maternity stuff, but I haven't regretted a single penny I've spent so far :D.

  • It might be a little early for maternity stuff.  I went through most of my bigger months in much cooler weather last time so I have nothing for summer.  However, I think summer clothes are easier as far as getting by without actual maternity clothes.  The "long and lean" tanks from target are really long - longer than most of my maternity tanks.  I plan on living in them.  I got a really cute skirt at target, also.  It's linen and has an elastic/drawstring waist so it will work pregnant or not, which I love, and can be dressed up or down.  I'll probably get it another color.  I'll invest in some capris later, I think, probably at Motherhood (I find their jeans pretty flattering).  I always had good luck with tops from old navy (most run a bit big so order down) but not their jeans.  Target maternity is overpriced, IMO.  In general, the more non-maternity stuff you can make work, the better the investment.

  • Looser tops should work fine; if you are in need of pants/capris/shorts, look for the ones without the full panel--- just elastic waist. I started wearing mine at 8 weeks this time because they were more comfortable. You may grow out of them, which is annoying. I couldn't wear mine after about 28 weeks last time as they were too tight.

Sundresses are a godsend, as is the Bella Band.

  • I'd buy maternity. Come August then you will really not be fitting in regular clothes and you'll have them. Really, whatever makes you comfy is key.

  • I vote clothes with elastic waists and/or bella band.

  • I second the momma who mentioned Target. I'm 11 weeks and yesterday I went to get a couple of bottoms because my shorts and capris are just not comfortable. Target has these really cute t-shirt like skirts for $12.99 and they are perfect for the in-between stage that we are in- maternity are too big, but our regualr sizes just don't work. I also saw the long and lean tanks she was talking about and they work wonders too. I would probably just go for sun dresses and elastic wasted skirts and tanks as well as when we are going to actually need maternity clothes it will be way colder, and why spend more now on maternity clothes ( b/c lets face it the word maternity adds 25% to the cost) when you can get away with regular:-) I also got a cute striped tankini at target to wear at the beach because my belly still just looks bloated instead of round and my regular bikini just wasn't cutting it:-) Good luck!! I hope you find some cute clothes to weat in NOLA! I was there in April and it was tons of fun:-)

  • Thanks ladies!  you were all lots of help.
I am going to look into maybe a pair of shorts and 1 set of capris with an elastic waist band if I can find them and just find lots of loose tops, dresses and skirts I think.  I am definately going to need more cold weather maternity stuff than summer stuff so it does make sense not to waste too much money.  However...one or two maternity bottoms maybe heaven-scent for my bloat-induced discomfort (and lord knows what the airplane ride is going to do to me with the bloating either!! Yikes!)

  • I am with you on this one, I am noticing my clothes dont want to fit already, so I will be buying maternity already, so I would go ahead and buy a few that way you got them. The people at the store will be able to fit you.

  • Bella band and tops with empire waists do the trick for me.  I find that when i buy a size up, things just start to look baggy and frumpy all over.

Sundresses and skirts were my best friend last pregnancy. In the spring/summer anyway. I bought a couple skirts from old navy and wore those with tank tops for the longest time. Maternity tanks, I thought, were pretty long so even if they are too long now, they will be comfy and still fit later.

    Agreed!

  • I wouldn't buy a size larger because then if you bounce back really fast after pregnancy those clothes are going to be wasted.  I would try some transitional maternity clothes which can be meant for both during and after pregnancy.  They will give you extra room right now while you aren't showing much and they can also be used during and after pregnancy so you aren't wasting money on clothing.
