Anyone's 10 month old not eating solid foods?

My 10 month old (almost 11 month old) will not eat solid food! She will take only puree foods....and gags whenever a big chunk of anything gets in her mouth. When I try to put the tiniest piece of anything even close to her mouth she turns her head in disgust and gets mad. Is anyone else experiencing the same thing? What should I do? At her 9 month check up the doctor said it was ok...but that was almost 2 months ago. Should I be worried?

DD will be 1y in two weeks and still eats primarily pur?es.  She loves Cheerios and other little rice bar type things, and will gnaw on a chunk of apple and get some off, but table food (pieces of pasta, pieces of chicken, pieces of turkey, chunks of banan, chunks of avocado) she'll pick up, make a face over it, and toss it onto the floor. If. Put it in her mouth, she gives me a dirty look and spits it out. She will take chunkier pur?es now than she used to though. Do t know if it's an issue or fine yet since we haven't been to the pedi for a while, but I figure as long as she gets sufficient nutrition I won't worry too much.

  • Whew! That makes me feel better. I was beginning to wonder if my child was the only one! lol! She is getting sufficient nutrition....I just wonder why she has such an aversion to solid foods? Hopefully if I keep introducing it to her...one day she will try it!!!
  • you might want to work with/check with an OT /SLP they may be able to work with your LO to get past food aversions Or they could also tell you it's nothing to worry about at this age too.

It could be a texture thing, a sensory thing maybe even a temperature thing, Just a few suggestions.

  • Honestly, I don't think this is a big deal.  At Gabe's 1 year appt the pedi said purees were fine and that we should keep offering him soft easy to chew food and things like puffs and cheerios.  One day a light bulb literally went off and now he only eats solid table food. EI is very premature with this sort of thing.  If she would only take a bottle and not take puree at all, then I would be worried.  But, babies go at their own pace.  Just keep offering things to her and exposing them to her.  She will get it.

I know you have had good experiences with EI.  But, I think you should be a bit more mindful about your recommendations.  10 months and eating purees is very developmentally appropriate.   Prematurely recommending EI can make moms worry unnecessarily.

I don't think she was necessarily trying to scare her, but I do see where it comes off that way.

One of my best friends works in EI and while I know Rubes is perfectly fine, sometimes she has suggestions or a creative way of thinking that will help me out/get Rubes to do something.

I know there's nothing wrong at all, it's just a different perspective.

To the OP: I had the opposite problem. My LO would not touch a puree after about 7 months..lol...but I know tons of kids that were well over 1 before they "got" table food.

Yeah, I wouldn't have said anything usually, but it wasn't the first time that I feel EI has been recommended prematurely.  EI is awesome, if needed.  Gabe gets physical therapy weekly.  But, in EI kids have to have 1 standard deviation off of average (just like kiddos who qualify for IEPs).  So, if they aren't that far behind, it is kind of a meaningless recommendation that causes unnecessary concern.

Good point! Makes perfect sense. I guess I never thought twice about it. I know Rubes doesn't need EI so I just randomly ask when we're together..it's not like I'm dragging her into her office...lol..and you're right that's what that post kind of sounded like.

  • Sorry, I didn't mean to scare any one, I meant it more as away to see if they have suggestions to offer trying to transition to solids, Sorry again, Ive been dealing with 2 bears lately and probably rushed through my first response
