Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Tell me about your flexible schedule/routine

My son is 3 months old and I am very lucky that I don't have to go back to work until the end of Aug (I'm a teacher).  My MIL will be watching him and I would like him to be on a flexible schedule/routine by then.  Right now she is always saying... "Let's try to hold him off or he's fine" when I tell her he wants to eat.  I would like to be able to tell her, "ok he will eat between 8:30-9:30" or something.  I also would really like to get him on a nap schedule.  In the morning he is consistent with his nap, but the afternoon all he does is cat nap.  I'd love to hear about all your days.

THANKS!

Re: Tell me about your flexible schedule/routine

  • Sounds like you don't want a flexible schedule, you want a SET schedule.  I have a flexible schedule in that he eats and sleeps when he wants to.  I let him call the shots, figuring he knows what he needs (even if he doesn't know it, per se, he sends cues and I follow those).

My son is 5 mo and, like yours, he wakes at about the same time every day (between 6-6:45 usually) and he naps around 8:45-9:30 (when we get back home after dropping my daughter off at school / camp for the day) and in the afternoon all he does is cat nap (15 min or so on his up, up to 45 min if he's held).  He usually eats about every 3 hours during the day, but if he's not acting hungry I don't offer it up...he'll sometimes go 4 hours during the day without eating and there are other times when he wants to eat after 2 1/2 and, well, so be it!  To me, that's a flexible schedule...I have a general idea about the time he'll have to have his naps and eat, but I truly just go by what he clues me into!

If you want to get him on a set schedule, eating and sleeping at specific times, just start doing it until it becomes second nature to him and he starts to expect (and therefore want) to eat at 8:30 and sleep at 10:30, etc.  GL!!!

  • I'm exactly the same way. I go by LO's cues on when she wants to eat, sleep, play, etc. She knows what she wants better than I do lol! I figure that kids can be on a more strict schedule once they hit school age, and I did that with DS and he's 8 and I've had absolutely no problems.

DD will wake up about 630-7am and lay around for a little while and babble to her feet and monkeys. She eats and plays a little while and then will take her morning nap.

She will play, eat, and nap throughout the day and about 7ish she's ready for fruits or veggies, cleanup and pj's and then a bottle around 8ish. She's normally asleep between 8-9pm and sleeps all night.

  • Same here. If he's hungry I feed him. He naps when he wants. And feedings and naps tend to occur around the same time every day. I followed his cues. The only thing I am regimented about is bedtime. Usually he will fall asleep on his own around 9 - 9:30 but I make sure he is in his crib every night at that time, even if he is awake.
