Suggestions on fast food options for GD moms?

I know, I know, I shouldn't be eating it at all!  However, we're moving this weekend and we have EVERYTHING packed, so cooking is not an option.  We've been eating sandwiches and the like, however, the bread makes my numbers skyrocket at times, too and to be honest, I'm just getting tired of peanut butter sandwiches!

Does anyone have any go-to suggestions?  I've only got 2 more days to make it through before I can start eating normal again.  I've tried pizza, but it didn't work out for me and my numbers were high the next morning.  And salads are a no-go - my pregnancy tummy cannot tolerate lettuce.

Re: Suggestions on fast food options for GD moms?

  • Most, if not all, of the fast food chains list the nutritional content on their web page. I was having a craving for Taco Bell, so I looked up the carbs for several items. I really don't like meat, especially Taco Bell's, so most items I would normally order were out of my carb range, but they did have several meat based items that would have been fine. I think I remember a hard shell beef taco only having something like 15 carbs.

  • I actually got better numbers eating out many times. Ditto PP - check the restaurant's website for nutrition info so you know what you can eat before you go. Most place I could have a burger, but no fries. Taco Bell I always did 2 hard shell tacos.

  • I've been looking here and there - just hoping to get some idea for what worked for others :)  I went with a Double Cheeseburger and side salad from McDonald's tonight, so I'll see how that goes.  Thanks for the suggestions ladies!

  • I've found many things that work for me. A large chili from Wendy's is a great snack, or for a meal, I'll add a value fry. Their plain grilled chicken sandwich is great too (comes with lettuce, tomato, and honey mustard) and I'll get that plus 5 nuggets and sauce for a meal. 10 nuggets and sauce from McDonald's works great for me too. At Taco Bell, I'll get a nacho supreme and a regular crunchy taco for a meal.

Chipotle bowls are GREAT too. Back at like 8 weeks when my nausea had me confined to the couch and unable to eat anything at all, the one thing I actually craved AND could eat? Chipotle burritos. I still can't explain it, but it worked, and they stayed in me! Since GD I've cut out the tortilla and the bowl I get comes out to around 50g of carbs. It's a huge meal though so if I manage to finish it, I am extremely uncomfortable. haha.

My appetite is starting to come back after being MIA this whole time, so I've pretty much been eating whatever might work for me AND sounded good, since not much has sounded good. I think I should feel worse about eating fast food, but I am still 13 pounds below my pre pregnancy weight... I'm trying to eat healthy, but I know I need to gain some weight, even though I'm about 150 pounds overweight in general; this isn't the time to drop pounds.

I just pull up the nutrition info for whatever place when we're out and about. I probably get fast food 3 or 4 times a week, but it would be a solid once or twice a month if I was actually gaining weight.

  • Chick fil a nuggets and a small fry with a cup of ranch and diet coke works for me, and it's Delish! Also popcorn chicken and tater tots from sonic. Wendy's nuggets and their new Mac n cheese has also worked for me.

  • While on vacation I was able to eat allot. Of course salads, double cheeseburgers, sweet potatoes fries, steak and shake burgers, taco bell (2 shells are 16g of carbs), one chalupa(sp)....I didnt try any fried chicken. Thought that might be just hoping for too much.

I went to taco bell tonight (DH insisted he was starving and I didn't want to watch him eat)... I asked for their nutritional info. and was given a brochure with everything on their menu listed (there was a box of them on the wall next to the cashier).  If I remember correctly Obama signed a bill that said all large fast food chains MUST give you the nutritional info. if you request it or have it posted on the wall nearby.

  • 8 piece chicken nugget meal from Chick-fil-a with the medium fries will keep my numbers justttt where they need to be.. I forget the exact # of carbs, but I looked it up, and that's about the only thing that works!  Actually, I think I looked up the 12 piece chicken nugget, but the first time i got it, 12 was too much for me -- wouldn't eat them all -- so switched to the 8 :)

    Good luck with the move!!!

  • I could eat 3-4 hard shell tacos from taco bell, salads, and papa murphy's de-lite pizza chicken bacon artichoke pizza (2-3 large slices).  My GD was really hard to control.  I could also do potbelly's chicken salad sandwich on whole wheat without the top piece of bread.

I can do 2-3 tacos from Taco Bell.

I love going to Panara bread. I get the 1/2 chicken ceaser salad sandwhich & a cup of the broccoli and cheddar... yummmm....

  • Wendy's Chilli isn't too bad and definitely filling. I would go easy on the crackers if bread makes you spike to be on the safe side. Add cheese for extra yumminess.

Fries are really bad for my blood sugar. My numbers will stay high for hours. I would stay away from those. Even onion rings are suprisingly high in carbs due to the breading.

Chicken fingers aren't a bad choice, but be careful with dipping sauces. A lot of times the BBQ or honey mustard can be worse for you than the breading. I like chick fil a nuggets because they aren't loaded with breading. I think they have grilled ones now too, which would be even better.

Cheddar broccoli soup from Panera isn't too bad. Or flat bread from Subway.

You might be able to handle a burger, depending on the size. McDonald's cheeseburgers are so small, they are aren't as packed with carbs as a bigger burger, like a Whopper.

  • I go to Mcds and get a double quarter pounder (i dont eat the bun) and a small fry...or a 6" at subway (the white and wheat have the same carb count, just stay way from the fancy bread flavors and the fancy sauces) cause I can load on the veggies...a hard shell taco at TB only has 13 cars and the doritos locos tacos have 12 (and they are AMAZING) so you can ahve several of those for a meal or one for a snack, chick-fil-a nuggets..the 12 pack only has like 6 or 7 carbs but their sides are crazy bad as far as carb counts go, mcallisters (if you have one near by) has a pick 2 where you can get 1/2 a sandwhich and soup or salad..works well if you're craving a sandwhich...

  • My doctors gave me this site:  https://www.calorieking.com/ And I noticed a lot of fast food options on there. Unfortunately the Red Robin we had been doing for date night is no longer an option, but I am excited that in a pinch or with a craving I can do a little bit of taco time or a few specific things at Jack in the Box (in the small sizes). I know fast food isn't the best option when you're pregnant - but my heartburn gets so bad sometimes I just have to eat that minute. I share a car with my boyfriend and sometimes am away from home a couple hours at a time due to his work commute or our doctors appointments. So I've been looking to occasionally have some as well. Taco Time (if you have that there) is really good about having healthy options (and they usually have protein and carbs and "free" veggies all in the same taco).
