3rd Trimester

5 lbs at 32 weeks?

I had to go in for two unplanned ultrasounds bc low fluids this week.  I am 32 w 1 day preg and at the 1st ultrasound they estimated baby to weigh 4.7 lbs and at the 2nd (at the perinatal office) I was told baby weighs 5.1 lbs.

If I read websites like the bump - thats more than 1 lb heavier than what baby should weigh right now.  I took the 1st estimate wtih a grain of salt, but since i had it done a day later with an even more involved ultrasound (and a different sonographer) and they estimated 5.1 -those are so close I am assuming baby has to be coming in somwhere near the 5 lb mark.

if so - I am looking at a 10 pounder, right?

Re: 5 lbs at 32 weeks?

  • Not necessarily.  They can be off +/- a lb.  Also, he/she may not gain a half lb per week, or you may have just had a growth spurt.  We were at 4.5 lbs at 32 wk3 days...so not much smaller than your bebe, and I am told to expect 7.5 to 8.5.  Your EDD could also be off a little bit, and genetics will certainly play a role as to how big the baby will be.  The websites give you stats on the 'average' baby.  I am sure your baby is beyond average ;)

  • You never know. DD was 34 weeks and 3 lbs at birth!
  • Could be.  But they can also be off by a pound or so.  At our 30wk u/s baby was measuring 4lbs 9oz.  At 34wks, he was 6lbs 13oz.  And on Monday at our 38wks u/s he was measuring 10lbs 2oz!!!  I have a RCS scheduled for Monday, so I'll let you know after that how big he actually is.

  • Both my kids weighed in at over 7lbs at 33 and 34w so I really don't think 5lbs is all that big for 32w.  Not only that, but the measurements can be WAY off.

Also? That doesn't mean your baby will weigh 10lbs at birth.  It could be 9. It could be 6.  There's just no way of knowing until they're here.

That being said, my kids were 9.5lbs born 2 weeks early (induced due to pre-e which causes LOW birth weight.)

This baby is estimated to be right around the 4lb mark at 27-28w.  We'll just wait and see, but I'm sure it will be about the same size as my other two kiddos.

  • I'm in the same boat.  At 32 weeks, they had me have an ultrasound and estimated the baby was 4lb 11oz.  My doctor said she doesn't think he'll be a 10lb baby but that he will be big.  She assured me she thinks it's nothing I can't handle.  All 4 of my mom's kids were over 9lbs and I asked the doctor if she thinks that really matters and she said, yeah kind of it is a good indicator.  She said to expect the baby to gain a half pound a week from then on, so I'm estimating that if their measurement was right, he'll be between 8 and 9lbs when he's born.

  • I had a growth scan at 32w4d and she was 5lb6oz.  I had a follow-up growth scan at 36w6d and she was 8lbs9oz.  So you could have a big baby, or it could be a growth spurt.
