Techniques to teach baby to fall asleep on his own?

DS cannot fall asleep on his own or fall back asleep after waking (night and naps). This results in him ending up in our bed halfway through the night and only 30 minute naps, which leave him miserable as the day progresses. He is starting day care in two weeks and his caregiver will not be able to rock him soundly to sleep with three other babies there. Pedi says we need to stop rocking him to sleep. We swaddle, white noise, my t-shirt on mattress, paci, mobile, etc. We're trying putting him in drowsy but awake, but that is hit and miss. If he comes out of the drowsy state he immediately starts crying. Does anyone have any other techniques to make him start learning how to put himself to sleep, or self-soothe??

  • We put DS in his PNP awake and turn on a vibration/white noise combination. He lays awake for a few minutes and sometimes fusses a bit (he doesn't full on cry), but he usually goes to sleep on his own.

  • Babies that young typically don't know how to self soothe.  My DD is barely learning, and her naps are still messed up b/c of it.  It sounds like you are doing everything you can.  I don't have anymore tips.

  • honestly, I think you can try all the techniques in the world, but until he is ready, he needs help. I am a big believer in the baby whisperer, but I just think babies self soothe when they are ready, not on our timetable. Some things that worked for us when he was ready to start were : white noise, lovey in the crib, placing a hot towel on the sheets a few minutes before I put him down, something that smells like Mommy (I actually put the pjs he will be wearing tomorrow under my pillow tonight, it was a suggestion a friend made and it did seem to calm him) and making sure to find the 'window' of sleep opportunity. GL!

I will say it will be easier for day care to get him to sleep...

  • I agree with pp...sounds like you are pulling out all the stops.  My only advice would be to be consistant with whatever you are doing...my dd seems to get a bit easier to put down each day and I 100% credit that with consitancy

  • You might want to ask your daycare how they get babies to sleep so you can do what they will be doing. ?Alot of daycares use the shh/pat technique (sitting next to a baby and putting your hand on them, sometimes gently rubbing the belly). ?Usually, the babies are crying or whimpering during this- I'd imagine if the baby was full-on crying, they might pick them up and sooth them and put them back down. ?
  • We use the shh-pat technique if our baby starts to get fussy too.  I also find that swaddling DS and just sitting with him vertical against my chest (with no rubbing, patting, or rocking) helps him fall asleep too and then I put him in the bassinet.  During the day for naps our Fisher Price Aquarium works wonders!!  I could put him down wide awake and turn that thing on and he'll watch it until he falls alseep.
