3rd Trimester

what exactly

what exactly do you put your newborn in to sleep? I am a ftm and all of this is new to me, do you just put them in a onesie? I see a lot of stores sell cute pajamas but mostly for 6 months and up.

Also I am having a really hard time finding the going home outfit. Any suggestions of cute places?

One last thing, some of our onesies say size newborn and others say size 0-3 months, can newborns fit in size 0-3 months?

Sorry if this all seems so ridiculous and stupid, I am a ftm and I just feel so overwhelmed with all of this information I know nothing about.

Re: what exactly

  • They can sleep in onesies, but it seems like most people prefer sleep gowns and sleep sacks since babies can't have blankets. Many babies like to be swaddled, too.

Some newborns are big enough that they need 0-3 clothes, which are bigger than newborn. I don't think many babies are in the newborn size for very long but most of them do need it for a little bit. If you have a big baby, you can skip to 0-3 easily, as newborn may be too small, but if newborn fits your baby you won't want to put 0-3 on them right away since i'll be too big. Clothes that are too big can be dangerous.

I've always just put my babies in a onesie when swaddled. It's very important that you don't overdress them as they can easily overheat.

I like a onesie with the sleep sack or swaddle. a few sleepers can be nice especially since DH likes the house a bit cooler when he sleeps.

DS was 6lb 14 oz at his smallest, I didn't think NB clothes were necessary. Just be prepared for him to be swimming in the 0-3 month size. After a few weeks 0-3 will most likely fit fine. All babies are different though. You may want to have a cute NB outfit or two for pictures.

As far as going home outfit, I think anything comfy goes. DS had a cream colored knit one piece. NB size is probably better unless you have a big baby.

  • DD was 6 lbs 11 oz when she was born. Her going home outfit was a newborn size and it was huge on her (she was down to about 6 lbs when we took her home). She wore newborn clothes for about 6-8 weeks. Some of the 0-3 month clothes fit her as well, but it depended on the brand.

As for sleeping, it was oddly cold when we brought her home (in June, 3 years ago), so we put her in several layers. However, once it warmed up again, we put her in a short-sleeved onesie and swaddled her. We had the AC on pretty low to make sure she was cool enough.

  • I preferred a onesie during the summer and then either a gown or a zipper jammie so that I wasn't messing with snaps in the middle of the night.  Also the sizing is dependent on brand some say newborn others 0-3 always look at the weight guidelines for an idea of the size.  My 1st LO was only 6 lbs so she was in the small stuff forever!

Thanks for asking this!  I'm a FTM, too, and haven't even thought of this.

  • There's already a lot of good advice here but just one thing to add- my daughter was born full term at the normal weight of 6 lbs 12 ozs and she was swimming in 0-3 months sized clothes for the first few weeks. I'm really glad no one had given me the advice to skip the newborn stuff because not only did we use it for probably at least 6 weeks, she spent her first 3 or so weeks in the couple of preemie sized sleepers someone had bought us by accident.
  • They can sleep in onesies,

  • I bought onesies... but then someone told me they are difficult to get off and on during the night to change the diaper. They recommend I get a few night gowns or 2 piece nighties as well. I'm a FTM though too so I have no idea :)
