Mama's of LOs with Allergies

What have you done or do you plan to do for your LOs 1st birthday party? Did you make all of the food so that your LO could eat it, or did you make food that had your LOs allergins in it and just avoid giving it to them?

Nolan's birthday party is this Saturday and I had planned to make all of the food milk, soy, and egg free. Thanks to some of the mama's on this board I have found a recipe to make an allergin free cake. I have been having a harder time finding food recipies, but I think I should have enough if I substitute some ingredients. My parents think I'm overreacting and they think I should just make sure to tell everyone not to give Nolan any food. However, my family (including my parents) has a tendancy not to listen and they just don't realize how serious his allergies are. I will bring his epi-pen regardless, but I don't want to have to worry about using it.

The reason I am thinking into this so much is because Nolan cries and throws a fit any time anybody eats something and he can't have it. I just want him to feel like a normal child and be able to be carefree on his birthday, and I don't want to have to worry about him getting into anything.

Am I totally overreacting? What would you do in this situation?

Re: Mama's of LOs with Allergies

  • J has an egg and peanut allergy. We had his party catered so I just ordered mostly foods that did not contain either of those. We had bbq and the only thing he couldn't eat was the corn bread. I also ordered a normal cake for everyone and a big vegan cupcake for him.

I also went back and forth trying to figure out if I should completely exclude eggs and peanuts from the party but in the end thought I really don't need to. In general I do not eliminate these things from his environment completely though.

If your son's allergy is so severe he cannot even be around those foods and/or you don't trust your family not to feed him then I would not include them.

  • We did the Very Hungry Caterpillar and had a ton of fruit. DS was obsessed with the oranges and strawberries. We didnt have that much, if anything that he couldnt have. He is very much at the point where he wants what we have. It is a party for him and the foods should be friendly too him. Family is always trying to give him this or that and I ALWAYS have to intervene. I would rather know whatever they give him should be ok than worrying that he got something he shouldnt have.

  • Martin's reaction to baked dairy and eggs is FAR less than it is to the straight up product so we did everything normal. He even had normal birthday cake and frosting. If your LO can't hang with baked stuff, I would definitely make sure that it was free of any allergens.

  • Thank you all for your advice! You made me feel better about the decision I made. Nolan is ok with baked in milk and soy, but he needs to avoid eggs 100% (even if they are in something that is made in a factory with eggs). I need to learn to stick to my guns and do what I feel is best, not what my family thinks.
