2nd Trimester

Why am I the crazy one??

In the past few days, twice I was given expired food (two cans of turkey gravy from Mom and I unknowingly bought expired mustard Friday). Now, I am not talking about two days or even one week expired, I am talking MONTHS past its expiration. Two separate people have lectured me for being too picky because I chose to take it back. HUH? Am I being weird for not wanting to eat stuff that went out of date in the summer?

Re: Why am I the crazy one??

  • If I just bought something and then noticed when I got home that it was expired I would most likely take it back. Now since the gravy was given to you I would not take that back since I never bought it. I would donate it.?

Their are certain things that I will eat past exp date (depending on how far i is past) can goods are usually pretty safe, but anything that is in the fridge gets tossed. My Dh cant smell so he relies on me to smell things and other then that he will toss it if the date has passed. Better to be safe then sorry with some food items.?

  • My mom gave DD some raisins that expired in 2007.  She didn't understand why I was mad.  I cleaned out her pantry about 3 months ago, so she must have had these squirreled away someplace.
  • Texas, so expired food is not OK for your consumption, but you'd donate it and expect the less fortunate to eat it?  Nice.

That is exactly what I was thinking. Who cares if the less fortunate get sick, right?

  • I always check the expiration date but my husband will eat expired food. Sometimes it looks really gross and he's just "hmm, it's a little stale." Gross. He does most of the cooking so I'm usually checking the dates on stuff once or twice a week so that I know what I'm about to eat hasn't turned.
  • I would not feel bad at all. DH is the expiration date nazi and everyone knows it. I would not want to have any risk to my or my family's health no matter what anyone says. Expiration dates are there for a reason, right?

  • I wouldn't feel bad about taking it back at all. I wouldn't normally eat food past expiration anyway but being pregnant--I've been extra cautious. Your feeling on this is perfectly normal.
  • Pregnant or not, I wouldn't eat expired food. Expiration dates are there for a reason.
