Dr. Browns question/ cold milk= bad mom?

We gave DS his first bottle of EBM last night, and it seemed as if the flow might be too much for him. He was a little squeaky/gaspy and had milk dripping out of his mouth like it was too much at once. Does anybody know if dr. Browns bottles have a "slow flow" nipple?

Also- I took the milk right out of the fridge and gave it to him. He didnt fight it and there was no spitting up/ fussiness afterwards. Is anyone else giving their kiddo cool breast milk?  We will only be doing a few bottles a week since I am almost exclusively breast feeding and I figure there is no point in getting him used to a warm bottle only to be stuck out in public with no bottle warmer. Is this a bad idea?

  • I give DD cold breast milk. Unless it is before bed, then I just pump and give it to her. You have to make things easy, on yourself. If she doesn't fuss, give it to her cold or room temp, or fresh...you may not always have access to warm it, or refridgerate it. If they take it all different kinds of ways, they have no preference established, and will take whatever. That makes it easy.

  • 1.) Dr. Brown's have levels of nipples... premie, 1,2,3, & 4. I always started with the premie nipples, as they are the absolute lowest. We are on a level 1 nipple right now. I never went past a level 2 nipple with DD1.

2.) If your LO takes BM cold, then he takes it cold. Now you won't have to worry about warming it up.

  • I give DD room temp formula. However your LO will take it is how I would give it. Plus like you said feeding in public is a lot easier if it can be cold/room temp.

  • I had the same problem with Dr. Brown and Tommy Tippee.  I switched to Playtex Nurser (bags).  These were great!  Once we started daycare though, they wouldn't use the bags so we switched to the Playtex airvent as recommended by our Pediatrician.  These use the same nipples.  These also work great.  They're a very slow flow, so it's easy to use a bottle or switch to the breast.
  • Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Is there a way to tell based on the nipple what level it it? I assume they're 1's, but already threw away the packaging.

Also- thanks for the information about possibly switching brands... Need to keep that in mind!

  • If he will take it cold, give it cold!  My DD is a tad high maintenance and will only eat bottles very warm.

  • When we gave DD cold milk, she did the same thing with the milk dripping out of her mouth. She also kept pulling off the bottle. It was all very messy. I thought it was the nipples, but when I started warming the milk again, it solved the problem.
  • I tried a whole bunch of different bottles when we were having gas problems with my LO and the slow flow Dr. Brown nipples did not work for us. I remember the first time we tried that bottle- my son wolfed that thing down in under 5 minutes when it usually takes him about 20. Then he almost instantly spit up about 1/2 of it when we burped him. I switched to the Playtex VentAire and have stuck with those.

  • the bottles come with level 2...you have to buy preemie and level 1 seperate.

DS is 8 weeks and on preemie because the other's too fast

  • Tried the preemie nipple tonight and it went much better. DS still seems to gulp it down, but I think some external pacing will help!

  • My LO takes cold breast milk. Sometimes I warm it, sometimes I don't. We don't have problems either way.

We ALWAYS use the preemie Dr. Brown's nipples- he chokes on the flow if he gets anything different. I've only seen them online and at BRU though- target doesn't seem to carry them.
