Baby Names

nickname for Penelope

I'm pretty stuck on Penelope for my little girl's first name (middle will be Caroline) and DH is ok with it, but has a bad association with Penny. We'll probably mostly call her Penelope, but want to sort of "seed" others with a nickname so that they avoid Penny. Here are a few I've come up with:

Pippi (or Pippy?)

Pippa (the royal family kind of ruined this one for me though)

Poppy (I like it, but then I think of Big Poppy--we live in Boston,

Ellie

Nellie

My favorite is Pippi, but I'm afraid it's too cutesy. I tell myself it's ok b/c she can go by Penelope when she's older if she doesn't like Pippi.

What are your opinions?

Re: nickname for Penelope

  • I like Pippi and even Pippa - I don't watch much tv so my first thought wasn't of Kate's sister

I do kind of like Nellie too.  If you're going to choose Penelope - which I like btw, you may want to meet her before you decide on a final nickname - it may evolve too. . .

  • I like Pippi and Nella. I think it's fine if she has a cutesy nickname, she can always go by something else as she gets older. My Hazel goes by Zeze, which I'm sure will disappear by her adult years.

  • I really love Nellie as a nn and I wouldn't have thought of it for Penelope but it definitely works! I personally would stay away from Pippi because of Pippi Longstocking, and if I saw a little girl with the name Pippa I would assume it was chosen because of Kate's sister, unfortunately.

If it helps any, David Ortiz is "Big Papi" not "Big Poppy." I grew up on Cape Cod and I'm a huge Sox fan and I don't think of him at all when I hear Poppy, so I think you'd be safe even if you live in Boston.

  • Love Penelope! I'm pretty set on this name if this one is a girl. My favorite nn is Penny, though I also love Nella, I think Pippa is a little too royal family and doesnt make much sense as a nn for Penelope really. Pippi is pretty cutesy but like you said it doesn't have to stick with her forever and you don't have to exclusively call her by the nn.

  • Penelope Wren is our top contender should we ever have another girl. We plan to use the nickname Nellie, but I also love Pippi or Poppy (we can't use the latter because it is DD2's middle name).

I had a pet mouse named Pippi.

I like Nella. And of those options, I like Poppy the best (though it is kind of grandfatherly to me).

To me, Pippa is a nn for Philippa.

  • Our girl's name is Penelope too! The nicknames I have been thinking of are Nel, Nella, Ella, Ellie.  We will call her Penelope a lot, also. I am thinking, as a pp said, a nickname will evolve.

  • I think if my parents wanted me to be called Pippi when my name could be shortened to Penny, I'd tell them to bite me.

     This.

If there are bad associations, avoid the name.
