Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Hip Dysplasia?

My daughter was a breech baby, so she had an ultrasound at 1 month for hip dysplasia, and it came back fine.  Today at her 4 months visit, her doctor noticed that her legs are a little bit uneven.  She was going to have an x-ray done at 6 months anyway, but now I'm worried...  If you have an experience with this, can you please share your story? TIA!

Re: Hip Dysplasia?

  • Someone posted something awhile back, so I am just going to copy and paste what I wrote :)

My DD was diagnosed in the hospital and by 3 days old she was in the pavlik harness for 24/7 for 8 weeks.  Then at 8 weeks they did an ultrasound and we were able to remove the brace.  We went back at 6 months for a follow up (x-ray) and it was discovered that both hips were bad not just her right hip.  She was placed in a rhino brace for 16 hrs a day.  It was a rough couple of days at first but she got used to it.  It ended up she only wore it when she slept....12 hrs at night and 2 two hour naps.  In the big picture it was not a big deal at all. Once we got the all clear to take the brace off she actually had a hard time adjusting to sleeping without it.  I promise it will get easier.  My DD at her 2 year checkup (x-ray) was given a clean bill of health!  No more brace and no more follow ups.  Feel free to PM if you have any specific questions.

  • Our pedi thought my DDs left hip felt a little off at her 2 month appt and had us go in for an ultrasound last Wed. Turns out she has mild hip dysplasia and was put in a foam diaper looking brace immediatley. She LOATHED the thing for a few days and it was rough but things have since gotten better (today marks one week that shes been wearing it 23/7) and I think she is used to it now. We go in for a follow up ultrasound on Monday to see if there has been progress and we find out how much longer she has to wear it for. It's hard to see your LO like that but be glad that it was caught early. Good luck!

  • If your Dr suspects there might be something wrong, I wouldn't wait until 6 months. If she is 4 months old, she is still small enough to be able to wear the Pavlik Harness. At 6 months of age, I believe she is too old for a harness and the next step could possibly be surgery and spica cast (although I'm not 100% certain on that). Id press for an ultrasound ASAP and wouldn't put it off. If she has DDH, her teatment could be completed by 6 months of age.

  • My DD was diagnosed with it on day 2 and ultrasounds were taken even before we left the hospital.  My pedi referred us to a pediatric orthopedic surgeon.  She saw DD at two weeks, one month, six months, 10 months, and almost 15 months.  At each appointment we had either an ultrasound or x ray done to look at her hip socket rotation and the measurement in degrees.  DD was always within 5 degrees of the normal range, and therefore she was always just on a monitoring level with the doctor.  No therapy or slings needed.  At her 15 month appoint we were dismissed.  Her socket had come into alignment naturally.  We do not have to go back unless I see something out of the ordinary.

  • DS Wore a Pavlic for maybe 6 weeks. I cried but he didnt seem to mind it but he was young. Please go to pedi specialist asap to avoid spica cast. At least the Pavlic is removBle. DS is fine now-ki kin and playing like a madman.
