cloth diaper leaking

Thought I would put this in a new post since you guys always have good ideas.

We have fitteds and covers, BumGenius NB AIOs, 3 FuzziBunz (I think) pockets, and some Kissa NB AIOs. They have not leaked out of the fitteds, but those are my least favorite because they're so crazy bulky. I'm not that vain on behalf of my babies, but seriously, they make for some huge baby butt.

So I know (or think I know?) that a good fit around the legs is important, but I keep worrying that making the waist tight enough to get a good leg fit is uncomfortable for them. How tight is too tight? I have a few hemp liners - should I just try putting those into the AIOs? We weren't having any leak problems before, when their legs were smaller, so I'm not sure that is the problem. Is there a point where the pee volume just outgrows the NB size absorbency? I guess more liners might solve that problem too?

I am trying not to spend any more money until they grow into the one-size AIOs we have - I rented these newborn sizes and between them growing faster than anticipated and our washing machine being out for almost 2 weeks, it's already a questionable financial decision :) I would be willing to buy more hemp liners though if that solves the problem, b/c I can use those in the one-size diapers later.

I really want to solve this problem because I had Jen sold on this whole CD thing and I can see the wavering in her eyes every time we spring a leak... :)

Re: cloth diaper leaking

  • How big are they? The BG NB AIOs worked well for us until about 9 or 10 lbs (3 mo or so in our case) then they started peeing out of them.  I LOVED them and bought some Smalls and later Mediums used (we still send the Ms to daycare. I wish I could find more).

  • also my girls have twig legs - i try to pull the front up a little to kind of make sure the leg is tight (even now) before fastening the waist. our DC puts all diapers on really tight, cloth or disposable, nd they dont seem bothered at all.
  • You have a much more varied stock that we have.  We have only OS Flips and several different kinds of doublers.  We finally acquired enough doublers to use one every time.  Mostly he does not leak at child care - of course they have a pretty dependable changing routine.  He is in huggies overnight disposables overnight - it is the only thing that works for our heavy wetter.  If I were to do it over, I would investigate something with better leg opening with those double gusset things.
  • also, is the diaper soaked when leaking?
  • They are 8, maybe 8.5 pounds each. I put one of the one-size BGs on her this morning and it's a little big, but we'll see.

The only reason we have so much variety is that I rented them and wanted to try different things out. I think we will be an AIO and maybe Flip kind of family.

They have mostly been soaked but a few have been mystery leaks - seemed like it just kinda fell out the side!

  • Is it possible they need to be stripped?

  • Good lord, I hope not - we've only been using them for about 3 weeks! Could they need to be stripped so soon?

  • They shouldn't need stripping yet unless they came to you with some build up already there. Were they new or used when you got them? If new, I'd think they weren't prepped enough, but if you didn't have leaks before, that seems unlikely. What detergent are you using? You might try changing that, or experimenting with your wash routine. No creams, right?

Ruling all those things out, I'd say your guess of them "outgrowing" the diapers is a good one. In our experience, it's very possible for them to outpace the diaper's capacity before they stop fitting due to size. Have you tried the hemp doublers yet? That should work, if it's a saturation problem. As for the mystery leaks, is it happening with both babies or just your son? We had a bit of a learning curve with E. If his fire hose wasn't positioned *perfectly* (centered and pointed down), the diaper might as well not have been there at all. LOL!!
