Skin Disorder

Late afternoon on Friday R got a weird rash all over his body in different places that would come and go within an hour. It didn't look like anything I'd ever seen and it didn't seem to be bothering him at all and he didn't have a fever.  I hadn't started him on any new foods and hadn't changed anything (detergent, soap, etc.).

I called his pedi and she said to give him benadryl if it didn't go away. We were doing his 6 month photos on Friday too. We just strategically placed him with items so you couldn't see the rash.  Wink

All weekend it would come and go, especially when he got hot but it didn't look like heat rash at all.  Again, he didn't seem bothered by it at all but it looked horrible, big red splotchy areas with white bumps or lines that looked like welts.

I took him to the pedi first thing Monday morning and after an exam and some tests, I was told he has dermographism.  It was 109 here on Friday and he did have heat rash, but it looked different on his skin because of the dermographism.  Luckily it's mostly just a skin sensitivity but it still looked awful and we'll have to be extra careful to keep him from getting hot.

Has anybody heard of this before? Sorry it's so long.

I have never heard of this before. Is there anything you can do to avoid it, other than keeping him cool? IS it a rash that doesn't bother him or is it itchy? Poor little guy!

  • I have heard of it, I have a friend who has it.  She takes claritin for it and it seems to help her sometimes.  It can be related to heat or sometimes pressure as well.  She would get big welts if she scratched herself with her fingernails.  It does not bother her though.

Yeah it doesn't seem to bother him either but he gets the big welts.  Maybe when he's older we'll look into Claritin but for now, I don't want to give him any medicine that isn't necessary.

Ricola - we just have to keep him cooler and make sure I don't dress him in anything that is rough, scratchy, tight, etc.
