delayed solids

dd is 6 months old and ebf, when should I start solids? What are the benefits of waiting longer? She seems full/satisfied. I talked to peds, they didn't seem anxious for her to start solids.

Re: delayed solids

  • i started on her actual 6 month birthday. first started w/ some rice cereal & so far she has had squash, bananas, & apples. i think at 6 months, when ebf, they need another source of iron b/c they aren't getting enough from the breast milk alone. i think the cereal has the iron.

  • We started avocado this week. He will be 6 months on Sat. Right now it's just to get them used to eating with a spoon, taste, texture, etc. DS is satisfied with bf'ing also but in the coming months will need to be eating more foods. Right now he's just taking 5-6 bites. We will try sweet potatoes to tonight. He may like them more.

  • Anything under one is for fun... babies can be EBF for up to a year with no issues, if you have the stamina for it!  Breastmilk has everything babies need -- even vitamin D and iron -- just at lower doses that is actually more easily absorbed/digested than anything that humans can make in a lab.  Sometimes pediatricians will tell you otherwise, but my experience is that pediatricians are not lactation consultants and when it comes to breastfeeding, I will listen to a LC over a pedi every single time.

For me, personally, we'll likely be introducing solids to DS after he's 7 months old.  They say if babies have a family history of allergies, the longer you wait the more his/her digestive tract has time to fully develop.  Kellymom has some great info if you want to read more.

  • My pedi said to wait until 6 months because he was STTN and still satisfied with BM. We tried cereal a few days prior to 6 months and have tried avocado, sweet potatoes and bananas. He likes to hold and chew on the spoon too so I don't always get the food into his mouth.

All of this. There is nothing wrong with starting solids, but there is also no reason why it can't wait. I think it boils down to personal choice. There is a lot of misinformation out there about babies and nurtition, I think. I take my advice from LC, others who delayed, and kellymom.

  • DS just hit the 6 month mark, and I haven't yet started solids.  Our pedi is fully supportive of delaying solids and shared with us that her youngest son didn't start until he was 10 months old.  That being said, I'll probably start him on oatmeal sometime in the next week or so simply because he really seems like he is ready and interested.

  • You've gotten some great advice already, so I'll just chime in to let you know we haven't started solids yet either. She isn't 6months yet, but it's coming up soon. She doesn't seem ready yet, but I plan on talking to the pedi about it at her appt. At our 4month appointment pedi was on board with us waiting.
