Kids bedsharing?

Do Your kids bedshare? DS1 sleeps in a queen size bed with DH while I sleep with DS2. DS 1 wants Ds2 to sleep with him and we think it would be nice for them so they feel more secure at night. Plus DH and I could actually sleep together! When do you think it would be safe for them to sleep together? Thanks for any suggestions!

Re: Kids bedsharing?

  • I wouldn't do it until I knew for sure the little can push the big off. My four year old is a super heavy sleeper, and a big cuddler, and I would be way too afraid to put even a young toddler with her.

However, when we start to transition my little to her own bed (probably not until she's two or so), I'm sure the girls will want to bedshare.

  • I bedshared with my older sister from the ages of 3-6 (she was 6-9).  I loved it.  We each had plenty of room, and it was great whenever I was scared or bored.  We are still very close and I think it's partly do to our late night whisperings.

That's cute that your son wants to sleep with the baby :)

I don't think that I would be comfortable with it until the baby was around 18 months, maybe even 2 years.  It would depend on how my oldest is though.  She's the type to thrash around in her sleep so I don't know if putting her in bed with her sister would work out for us.  I might have some bumps on bruises on the younger one in the morning ;)

  • I agree with PP. Once DS2 can walk, verbalize, push DS1 off if he is too close  that's the best bet. My sister's girls, 4 yrs apart, bed share though they didnt start till DD2 was closer to 2.

  • I would say maybe when the youngest is 2? My sister and I shared because of space constraints (shared a bedroom and couldn't fit much in there) for a few years as kids. She was 3 years older than me and we both survived it.

  • My kids bedshare, but they are older-DS is 4.5 and DD 2.5. They transitioned there from a family bed, so had previously slept in the same bed. I think 18 months- 2 years would be the minimum age I would feel comfortable with it. It also depends on your children's sleeping habits, DS barely moves at night while DD is all over the place.

  • I bedshared with my little sister when growing up.  I was 6 years older than her and we started when she was about 18 months old.  We both loved it.  Don't think I would try it until LO is a year old though, but love the idea.
