NBR... Sick Dog (kind of long and TMI)

I took my dog for a walk this morning, she peed and pooped.  Just the usual morning walk.  Came home, within 20 minutes she was whining and acting like she wanted to play/just had too much energy.  I was not about to go for another walk, so I waited at least an hour before finally taking her in the backyard, where she had diarrhea.  At this point I was annoyed, because her furry little butt collects it (this whole post is TMI... I warned you!), so I had to spray her bum down in the backyard and then give her a bath.  An hour later I noticed her shaking, and thought it was because she was cold from her bath.  Took her in the backyard and again, diarrhea.  I didn't think too much of it, until I came downstairs from working in the nursery and found bloody diarrhea all over the kitchen floor.  Called the vet and thankfully they can get her in tonight.  Hoping it will be solved with an antibiotic or something...

  • That's such a pain but poor little baby!  Our little guy had that same problem a month ago.  He was going everyway and literally couldn't help it.  It freaked me out when I saw the blood and I was so hormonal that I called my husband crying so hard I couldn't get the words out.  He started freaking out thinking something was wrong with the baby until I finally could get out that it was the dog and I was just overly emotional lol. Anyway, we kept an eye on our little guy all day and although he was exhausted he was fine.  We think it was because we gave him new doggie treats the night before and he tends to have a sensitive stomach.

  • I hope everything is alright!  When the seasons change, my vet said dogs get colitis a lot from digging in the dirt/checking out new plants, etc.  My poor Penny gets colitis just about every year because she's such a digger.  I hope it does get cleared up soon and it's a quick antibiotic fix!  Plain yogurt, cottage cheese, and boiled sweet potatoes help upset tummies, too.  I know a lot of people boil chicken and then cook rice in that stock water and give it to their dogs - I've never done that but I have given cottage cheese/yogurt to calm her tummy.

Thinking of you and your pup!

My dog came down with this a few weeks ago. We determined it was either hookworms which we got medicine for or some chicken jerky treats that I gave her from a friend. Apparently the FDA came out with a warning on them the week after I gave them to her. Luckily I didn't give her that much bc it can cause serious issues, u can google for more info. Check and make sure none of her treats are from china!
  • Thanks for all the replies everyone.  The vet was very helpful and recommended the chicken and rice switch for now, as well as put her on an antibiotic.  They are doing a fecal test to make sure it isn't anything viral or whatnot.  Seems like she is already doing better though, she hasn't gone since yesterday.  I figure it will take a little bit since her whole system was pretty much cleared out, poor girl :-(  But she is eating and drinking and just her normal self.  What a relief!

Yes, ever since this happened to one of my dogs they have all been on chicken and rice. I mix in a little hard dog food as well. They love it. I just make a huge thing of it each week and scoop into their little dishes. Sometimes when I know i"m going to be super busy, I make a whole bunch and freeze it so I just have to reheat. I hope your doggie feels better. I hate when mine are sick, too!
