Baby wearing advice.

I don't usually come to this board, but I do lurk from time to time. Also, TB's search feature is awful, so feel free to point me in the right direction (read: links) if this is discussed often and helpful posts already abound.

I didn't wear LO #1 too often because I wasn't very confident with how to, and it always felt awkward to me. I am due is November with LO#2 and would like some advice on babywearing, since I think it could make things a lot easier around the house, especially since I will have a 2.5 year old at that point. Plus, I never liked setting LO#1 down to clean, etc., since he got fussy quickly and then I would be unable to finish what I needed to do.

I am wondering about what kind of wraps are better for cold/warm weather, any helpful tips for a newb, what wrap is easiest on your back (I always felt like my shoulders had a lot of pressure on them when I wore LO#1), etc.

TIA.

Re: Baby wearing advice.

  • I'm a rookie, but I like my ring sling. A moby is okay, but gets very hot very quickly. I have mei tai, too, but I think that will be better when DD is older.

Every mom and baby are different though. Are there any baby wearing groups in your area? Maybe you could borrow some carriers/practice?

  • I love my Moby.  It isn't great for summer, unless you are in the A/C.  Some people say you can't use it for too long, but so far it works for me.  My SIL still uses hers with her 18 month old.

My friend uses her Moby so she can be hands-free to manage her 2 yo (her baby is the same age as mine).  She also has a babyhawk (she wanted an ergo, but apparently aren't good for short people).  She went to a special baby carrier store and they listened to what she wanted out of the carrier, helped her pick one, showed her how to put it on and how to get the baby in.

  • Oh, and I know the Moby site has youtube videos for how to put it on.  I am sure youtube has videos to show how to use any carrier your are interested in.

I've had a similar experience.  I still wear my 8-month old in the Moby around the house (though he is defintely a bit of a peanut-baby) because it's so comfortable for both of us.  Yesterday he especially loved being snuggled up so tight because he was a little tired and cranky after daycare.  I also love the fact that it's so warm when I want to run out to give the dog a quick walk so I don't have to throw on layer after layer.

All that being said, my personal favorite carrier is my Mei-tai.  I've been using it since he was a couple weeks old (I think...we used it from the beginning, but back then my husband usually wore him when we went out and he used the Pikkolo.)  It's not as "cuddly" as the Moby, but it is very easy to put on and you can do back carries with it.  It's also quick to tie so I can get it on and get going in under a minute.

  • Thank you! I will be doing some heavy research. I am particularly interested in woven wraps and Mei Tais.
