Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Xp: reflux moms...a question

Kate's been on Zantac for her silent reflux since she was 3weeks old. A major indicator of her reflux was her fussiness/crying during feelings, and her comfort eating. She very rarely spit up. At first it worked great, but the effectiveness seemed to decrease, so her dosage was increased at her 2 month appointment.

Yesterday she was extremely uncomfortable, like stiff as a board uncomfortable. I couldn't lay her down, or sit her up without her crying and arching her back. When I rocked her (she is elevated with her head on my shoulder) she would constantly push up with her feet and cry out. I couldn't get her relaxed at all. Even when I laid her down (she's a belly sleeper), she was still restless. However, she wasn't really fussy at all while she ate. Now I know babies have there good/bad days, but is this normal?

So, my question...

Do you think yesterday's episode was reflux related? Or possibly just gas? She's not up yet, so I don't know how she'll act today.

Re: Xp: reflux moms...a question

  • Unfortunately I think that's just part of the territory when it comes to reflux. I remember my lo would have horrible days and really good days. If it keeps up maybe Zantac isn't working for her and she needs something else, I know that was the case with my dd around her 2 mo appt. She's now on Prevacid liquid compound, 2.5 mL twice a day and overall her symptoms really started to improve around 3-4 months old.

  • Did your pedi write a script for liquid Prevacid? DS had been on Zantac but recently was switched to Prevacid. She said we can just get it over the counter when I asked for a rx. She said to get 15 mg capsules, open it up and pour one end's contents into applesauce. We do that 2x/day. DS does ok with it but I would prefer liquid form. It would be easier and faster for DS to take, too.

  • In 4.5 months we have been on 3 Rx meds Zantac .1ml 4x day, then Nexium 10 mg pk 1/2pk 2x day (-it was awesome, then we went to refill and it was on nation wide back order), back to Zantac (which didn't work), then to Prevacid 10mg 1/2 pill 2x day (which also didn't work) ... and last week we found a pharmacy with Nexium 10mg and our Pediatrician wrote a new Rx for it. Only 1 week later and we are seeing a lot of improvements.

We've also changed formula's 4x:  Enfamil New born, gentalease, Nutramigen now we are on Similac Alimentum. Our next step will be at 5 months old if Nexium shows no improvement....we will see an Gastroenterologist.

We've had an ultrasound, upper GI, and swallow study, didnt learn anymore than the fact he has AR.

This is a battle that sometimes I feel we've lost then I turn to my baby boy and I get big smiles...its like he reassures me he knows I'm doing all I can!!!

We were also told let gravity do its job, keep you LO elevated at least 30degrees during feeding and while sleeping. DS sleeps in his Nap Nanny Chill and will until he is sitting up or rolling over,  then I will look into the acid reflux wedges.

Yep wrote a prescription and we have to take it to a compounding pharmacy. We've never tried the pills but I like the liquid because you don't have to time it around their meals.

Does ur insurance cover the nexium?  Our GI doc said ins usually doesn't cover.  We've been given samples for now.  If not, how much do you pay, if u don't mind me asking.?  Trying to see what we might have to pay if ins doesn't cover.  Nexium has,by far, worked the best for our Ds.  Whatever it takes for him to feel better I will do it.  Thanks
