1st Trimester

1st Ultrasound - not 7 weeks but 5?

Hello -

This is my first pregnancy - so obviously I'm going to stress like no tomorrow.

I just got back from my doctor's office.. The appointment was really just to test my urine and to certify that I am pregnant.  But, I noticed that I was having a few sharp but then dull occasional pains on my left side.  That and I wasn't sure if the generic prenatal vitamins were making me sick or if it was just pregnancy symptoms...

They decided to give me an ultrasound (happy because it ruled out an ectopic pregnancy!) but sadly, they said it was 5 weeks to the date and not 7 weeks.

My LMP was May 1st.  So, from my calculations it should be 7?  Or are they just looking at the growth of it??  I'm so confused.

I am going back on Monday for another ultrasound to see if it is growing - but I know clearly when (or atleast approx by a few days when I ovulated, due to the LH tests that I was using and my diary of my LMPs for the past 6 months).

I am really hoping that there isn't a problem... The doctor seems real optimistic... But its hard to be optimistic when I swear my calculations were correct... ..   ugh --- anyone ever feel this or experience this?   Sad

Re: 1st Ultrasound - not 7 weeks but 5?

  • If you were calculating from the date of your last menstrual period, then 7 weeks sounds fine. The problem is that that assumes you ovulated on day 14 of your cycle, and not many women do that. It is entirely possible that you ovulated late this cycle - even 2 weeks late wouldn't be way out of the norm - and that is why your baby is measuring 5 weeks instead of the 7 you calculated. As long as everything else looked ok, I wouldn't worry. Again - your LMP is only accurate for dating a pregnancy if you ovulated on day 14.

  • Ok that makes a lot of sense.  Thank you.

    I sometimes over analyze things.

You likely ovulated later than you realize. This is common. The time between my LMP and my actual DD was off by two weeks when I was pregnant. NBD. Try not to stress.

Sounds like you ovulated "late". Good luck!

  • yup, i ovulate a week later than most women (i ovulate on day 21 instead of 14), and lo and behold, when i got my first u/s it said due date was Jan 6, EDD based upon LMP would have been Dec 31 (there is my one week difference)! I agree w/the above post, you prob ovulated later than the 14days.

  • The same thing is pretty much happening to me. I am almost positive of my dates (my husband works out of town 7 days on 7 off) and I got an early positive HPT. When I went yesterday they told me i am a week off and the heartrate was really low. What was the heartrate?
  • I've been having sharp pains as you described on my left back side and the nurse practitioner basically told me not to worry. And this was after an ultra-sound, etc, where the baby was doing fine. If it helps I'm at 6 weeks.

I'm thinking it's either the constipation or the way I'm laying on my side on the couch when I get home.

    Hope all is well!

  • Unfortunately the same thing happened to me and didn't end well but I agree with the other ladies you could have ovulated late. So the best advice I can give you is hang on to that hope and remember today you are pregnant and love your baby! Good luck!

  • Yep - my LMP was May 8, making me 6 weeks today.  However I ovulated on Day 19, so when I go for an u/s, I'm fully expecting to be told that I'm measuring small.  Try not to stress about it, everything will be fine!

  • Thanks everyone for your support - it's a bit early to see the heart, and they weren't really looking for that (just confirming the size and location).  I'll know more on my second u/s on Monday. I spent 2 hrs talking to my sister tonight, who had her baby 9 months ago.. she explained that her due dates were changed 3 times.. so its normal. Fingers crossed that all will go well...I'll post an update then.

    Thanks again =)

    Good luck everyone!!
