Washing Covers

How often do you ladies wash diaper covers? DH and I are having a discussion about it. We always wash covers with any amount of poop on them, but otherwise the cover gets reused. What's your opinion? Do you throw used covers in the wash when the day is done? Every 2 days? Use them until they get pooped on? On the one hand, I don't want bacteria growing on the covers. On the other, I know the elastic wears down with every wash, and I'd like these diapers to last for the next baby. We use flips if that makes a difference.

As soon as they smell funky I toss them in the bag. I would say I use a cover on average 5 times before it gets washed (if no poop). So I use several covers one day I'll reuse them the next day as long as they smell ok. If I only use one cover all day, I'll put it into the laundry that night.

I really go by pee smell mostly. If they were somewhat lightly used (no poop, not really smelly) I throw them in a cold short wash with a clean towel and just a touch of detergent.

I wash all the covers that have been used every time we do a load. So sometimes if they haven't gotten poop on them I've just alternated between two covers (per kid) for 2 days and then I'll wash those. Usually I'll use 3-4 covers per kid between washes and then I have 1-2 per kid during the wash and then those will get washed the next time. I would never run a wash load just for covers unless somehow all of my covers had gotten poopy.

I wash them with my regular CD load, so every 2-3 days.
