Gender Determination U/S

Did anyone get one of these? It's not at my OBGYN. They won't allow another u/s until 20 weeks, which semi-upsets me. Should be my choice, since i'm paying.

But i found this place with a great deal!

Normally $89 but have a promo going for $39 right now! I want to get it so badly! I can't wait until 4 weeks :/

What do you ladies think?

Re: Gender Determination U/S

  • I'd probably just wait.  I wanted to know crazy bad too but waited until the 20 week appointment, 4 weeks doesn't make that much of a difference when you still have months to go until the baby is actually born. and free trumps $40.

I won't have another ultrasound until 22 weeks so I'm definitely going to do an early gender determination ultrasound.  Oh and $40 sounds like a good deal! I say go for it if you want and have the extra cash.

I haven't done a gender determination u/s because I'm cheap but for $40 I'd be all over it!
  • I would probably just wait also. I am 21 weeks and 6 days and my gender ultrasound it's until 23 weeks and 5 days, and I am sooooo excited for it, only 1 week and 6 days to go :).

  • I did it with DD & with this pregnancy. It was a wonderful experience and I'll do it with any other pregnancies we have. If you have the $39 why not.

The OB does the ultrasound at 20 weeks because it's not to determine the sex of the child but to check the vital organs and make sure everything is developing properly, doing it earlier might not show everything they want to see. Just out of curiosity when you say you are paying are you out of pocket or through insurance?

    This.

And, btw, the 20 wk u/s isn't up to your discretion because you're paying for it. It's to check the baby's anatomy so they wait until everything is better formed.

That's one of my reasons too, due to miscarriage in the past. I explained that to the doctor too when i called and it really turned me off how they did not seem to care to do an extra u/s. If it's something i want then i should be allowed to get it. But thank god for these little side ones you can get! Still deciding!

than it's what your insurance covers/allows. They would likely deny any not medically necessary ultrasound. If you were out of pocket I'd see being able to negotiate the number of u/s you get.

It wouldn't be covered by insurance unless you're having a true scare. If they can detect the baby's heartbeat with the doppler, there's no reason to order an u/s.

Since debating insurance & needs vs. wants isn't the point of your post I'll just say get the elective! The boutiques are really nice & it's great to have a non medical relaxing ultrasound. I'm not sure if your place does it but we have a DVD of LO moving & kicking with the sound of her heartbeat. It's a really nice keepsake to have.

  • We went to an elective place to have an US last weekend.  We also found out the sex at that time (16 weeks).  For us, it was an opportunity to have an US when all of our family was in town and it was a great experience to have everyone together when we learned the sex, etc.

I obviously have nothing against them - so if you want it, and have the extra money... I don't see why you wouldn't...

  • If you have the $40, I would say go for it.  However, be careful and take what they say with a grain of salt. I have a friend who went to one of the elective places at 16.5 weeks, they told her the gender, and they were WRONG.  When she went at 20 weeks, the dr's office was 100% sure that the baby was a girl.  They had told her boy at the elective place.  Just keep in mind there is a reason the dr's offices usually wait until 20 weeks to do the anatomy/anomaly scans.  Everything is better formed and there is less room for error.

  • I say go for it. I'm having one done tomorrow to determine sex. Yeah some people will argue that its too early...but the place I go will bring you back for a free 3d if they can't tell or are wrong. Also if they can't tell for some reason... at least I get to see my baby for a good 15 minutes. So yes I say definitely worth it!!!

  • We went to a botique to find out the sex this weekend. It was cheap and relaxing and we wanted to be able to see the baby before our A/S in July, as our last u/s was at 8 wks. I want the A/S to be at the proper time and since we know the sex we won't be focused on that, and the tech can focus on making sure he is healthy.

  • I had an ultrasound this weekend, and it was pretty awesome. They were having a sale as well, which is what sold me on getting one done. We saw the three white lines very clearly.

  • I would honestly just wait the 4 weeks... you've waited this long, what's 4 more weeks. I'd save the extra u/s for after incase the baby doesn't cooperate at the a/s. That's just me. It's your choice in the end.

  • I got an elective gender u/s at 16w4d and I'd totally do it again.  I say if you have the money and can't wait do it.

  • I did elective for a LOT more money than that and it was worth every penny for me. I can't express in words how much it meant. Seeing her tiny face and hands changed everything for me and has made me feel so much more bonded to her. I uploaded the pictures to my phone and take peeks at her every day at work.

Well, the two big reasons not to are that the FDA recommends against it and that it's theorized that ultrasounds are incredibly loud for the fetus, on par with a subway train in a tunnel.

  • I heard a story on the radio recently about OBGYN's want to ban gender determination ultrasounds held prior to 20 weeks, including so-called entertainment ultrasounds that serve no purpose.  Turns out that some people from certain cultures are using these early ultrasounds to make sure their first born is a boy and they are having abortions if it's not!

  • 16 weeks is a hard time to do ultrasounds efficiently. If it's just for gender, agreed, up to you.  I would suggest saving your receipts if you go shopping right away until confirmation at 20 weeks. Sometimes gender is not perfectly clear that early and little boy parts can hide... It's not impossible, but not as clear. Best wishes!
