June 2012 Moms

Super-fast, unplanned "natural" birth to big baby!

Our 2nd son, Jeffrey Henry F---, was born on his due date (June 8) @ 9:46 P.M. weighing 9lbs 4oz & 20.5 inches!

Let me just preface by saying that my husband is an anesthesiologist & that (except for baby?s & my health), having an epidural again this time was my #1 priority, lol!

A "quick" birth story:

I had been having contractions since about 9 that morning; anywhere from 3-10 mins apart for almost an hour before ?shutting off? for anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.  My friends & mom insisted I was in labor, but I wanted a full hour of consistent contractions before calling the OB.  Fast forward to about 7 that night, & I was pretty sure this was ?it? so we headed for the hospital, although I was still half convinced they?d send us home.  By the time we completed the nearly hour drive however, the contractions were so strong they were almost making me sick.

Now let me just say that we walked into the hospital @ 8:30, my water broke while we were waiting in triage @ 8:43, & Jeffrey was born @ 9:46, so everything is kind of a blur.  I know I did not have time to get properly checked in & I barely had time to have an IV placed.  When they checked me after my water broke I was 4cm, & they moved us to L&D.  One of my husband?s anesthesia colleagues came to evaluate me (probably around 9:15) & at this point I was nearly screaming in pain.  (I just kept saying ?help me? & ?please? b/c I didn?t know what else to say; the nurses thought I was talking to them but it was more to God, haha)  She asked me if I felt like I needed to push & I said yes; at that point they checked me & I was 9cm.  I still hadn?t accepted the fact that there wouldn?t be time for an epi & said ?I don?t want to feel any pain.?  No one was telling me but I could tell & I finally asked ?this isn?t going to get any better, is it?? & a nurse told me ?there just comes a point when the best way to get rid of the pain is to just push the baby out.?

At that point, tears started streaming down my face & I started asking for my mom, who was on her way.  I know it may seem silly to some of you, but I was so scared?I was just so unprepared for doing it without an epi b/c birth with my first son had been so easy & completely painless.  With my next contraction I screamed such that my OB checked me again & said ?he?s right there? & started breaking down the bed.  Again, blurry, but I know my mom barely made it in time & I would say I maybe pushed for 10 mins.  Also at some point I know I yelled at my OB ?you?re hurting me!? & he was like ?it?s not me, it?s the baby coming out,? haha.  (Although my mom said he had half his arm up me & he later admitted he had a difficult time delivering his shoulders b/c of his size.  Also, as an aside, an u/s the wk. before estimated him to be 7#13).  Thankfully (and miraculously) after all that I only needed 1 stitch & recovery has been a breeze.

Overall, I am so thankful for my health & that of my baby?s, but I will say that I am a 2nd time mom & a medical doctor & at no time did I ?know? that I was in labor; nothing was textbook.  Also, I don?t want to scare anyone planning for a ?natural? birth; if I had been prepared for such an eventuality I probably could have handled it better, it?s just not something I ever wanted or would ever do again J

I don?t know how to post pics anymore since tiny pic doesn?t work, but Jeffrey has a full head of black hair like his daddy & is BFing way better than his brother at this stage (probably b/c he?s 2 pounds bigger, haha).  I wish so much luck to those of you still waiting for your June babies, this is such a special time of life!

  • your story is my biggest fear....lol! I had a pretty good delivery with my first and I am terrified that when we decide on a second baby that this would happen to me.... so scary. I have NO desire for a natural birth. You rock!
  • OMG!  This is my birth story. My prob was only that my fist contraction was at 3:50 pm, we arrived at the hospital at 4:50, and she was in my arms by 5:19.

I agree that recovery has been easier, but that's a pain I never want to experience again. I too had a 9 lb, 1oz little one.  Congrats on your new addition.
