Baby Names

Baby girl name :)

I'm not 100% sure if my baby is a boy or a girl but I decided that our boy would be the III. Me and my SO are set on a name but I was just wondering what other people think about it...I was thinking Isabella Marie or Isabel Marie. I like old fashioned names :). Also even though me and my SO are not married YET, but I was thinking about giving our little one his last name. Some of my family doesn't agree with this...:(.

Re: Baby girl name :)

  • No offense but there really isn't anything old-fashioned about Isabella/Isabel anymore. Thanks to Twilight, it's about as trendy as you can get. It's actually ranked number two on the US SSA name list, according to behindthename.com.
Also, if you and SO aren't married or planning on getting married, I would give the baby your ln and then probably change it after you guys are married. That way the dad won't have any rights you don't want him to have if you guys have a nasty break up -- knock on wood.
    Hope this helps.

I think the names are lovely. And to the prior poster, a name can be both popular and old fashioned (a lot of old fashioned names are popular now). I definitely prefer the old fashioned trend to some of the other trends out there right now. As for the baby's last name, I have no advice. If your BF is the baby's genetic father, I don't think it's name will make a difference on way or the other in any potential custody or child support disputes (I think the more important thing may be getting his name on th birth certificate).

  • In most states giving the baby his last name has nothing to do with custody. In Ohio where I live if parents aren't married then the father has no legal right to the child at all until a judge orders it.Makes no difference if the name is the same or not.

  • I personally wouldn't use Isabel. There are a lot of other older, pretty names that aren't so popular.

  • I think it's a really pretty name, but it seems to be VERY popular right now.  If that isn't an issue for you then go for it.

Last name... I don't know how to answer that other than you have to make the right choice for you.  Hope you and your BF are for a lifetime if its right :) best of luck!

  • I think it's pretty Smile

  • That's a ridiculously overused name.

And the father has just as many rights to HIS CHILD as the mother does.  Sheesh.  Doesn't matter what the last name is.

I think Isabella is beautiful! And this person is 100% correct.  My daughter has her dad's last name, we're not married, but if we broke up I would instantly have full custody of her because I do right now as well. Unless you have a custody or child support agreement in most states (it could be all, I'm not really sure) giving a baby a different last name doesn't do anything. You could name your child Isabella Marie Smith even if neither of your last names are Smith and it wouldn't matter.

  • I don't really care for it, but it isn't bad. I think not giving your baby your SO's last name is a slap in the face to him. I absolutely would unless you don't plan on being with him long term, but it sounds like you do.
