Intro -- I can't stop temping!

Hi Ladies, Longtime lurker here. Background -- DH (28) and I (29) have been married about 5.5 years and just learned I'm pregnant with out first child about two weeks ago (success on month #5). We feel blessed, excited, and anxious all at once. I've only had a few symptoms -- tender breasts, skin breakouts, trouble sleeping, and occasional mild cramping. Here's my problem -- I haven't stopped taking my waking temp since I got my BFP. I can't seem to drop the habit. When I was TTC, it was so helpful to me in getting an idea of what was happening in my body. My temps have been consistently at 98.2 or 98.4 for the last week and a half, but they've dropped a bit the last two mornings -- yesterday 98.0 and today 97.9. I'm getting a little nervous that the drop is a sign of an impending m/c. I know that's not a huge drop, I'm just afraid a downward trend is beginning. I've searched a bit online and the sense I get is that I should have stopped temping once I got my BFP. But now that I've seen this drop, do you think I should temp a couple more days to see if it continues to go down? If it goes back up or stabilizes, I'll stop. Is anyone still temping? What are you seeing? For those who temped while TTC but have since stopped, did you find it difficult to let it go? TIA! Best wishes to you all.

  • OMG I could've written that post myself! You need to stop temping! I kept doing it for a while and every little fluctuation freaked me out so much. If you look at my chart you'll see that I tend to still do it every couple of days, but I really need to stop too. It will just make you crazy. Put the thermometer away :) I put it in my dresser which is across the room so I can't just roll over and get to it..it helps a little teeny tiny bit. I think I'm officially DONE though! (Feels good!)

  • First, welcome and congrats!

Second, I can totally relate on the temping thing. I have been temping since my BFP and it was reassuring to keep seeing high numbers, even though I know I needed to stop or else I'd drive myself crazy. Sunday my temp dropped a bit (still over the coverline, but a dip from recent days) and of course it sent me into a frenzy. I googled and couldn't find solid info about temps in early pregnancy being a good indicator of an impending m/c.

I decided I *needed* to temp one more day to see if it came back up or I'd forever wonder about it and committed to stopping after today. We'll see how that works out;-P It's just so ingrained in my AM routine now, unless I put the thermometer out of reach, I'm sure I won't stop. But I definitely recommend you stop after a few more days of seeing it go back up!  My chart is linked in my sig if you want to see how my temps have been.

  • That's so funny that you wrote this because I am still temping as well!  I am not setting my alarm to temp, but if I'm magically up at the time I normally temp then I have been.  I read somewhere on the internet that sometimes people temp throughout their whole first trimester to help predict miscarriage.  I think I need to stop soon too before I drive myself crazy!

  • I stopped temping when I got my BFP for this reason - I knew I would drive myself crazy!! Also, I really wanted that extra bit of sleep.

Try not to be freaked out by one or two off temps. One or two does not make a trend, and it's natural for your body to shift up and down. Put the thermometer away!! :)

  • I totally know what you mean.  I kept temping until I had my u/s and saw the sac and yolk. It really doesn't do any good though.  But I understand how you feel.

  • Thanks for your encouragement Ladies. This morning my temp jumped back up to where it had been for the last 10 days, so that was nice! A lot of worry for nothing. That was my last temp -- I'm sending my thermometer to my bathroom closet!
