I gave birth to my first at the Brooklyn Birthing Center in 2010 and had a wonderful experience. I had a completely natural, drug free water birth. In case of an emergency they transfer you to Maimonides Hospital. And I haven't heard good reviews about the hospital. I'd like another option for backup. Has anyone been able to have a completely medication free birth in a NYC hospital that they liked? I was looking into the St. Luke's Roosevelt Birthing Center and I read that many of the mothers that took too long laboring were transferred to L&D and given Pitocin. I'd like an atmosphere that's encouraging and supportive for a medicine-free birth. Any suggestions?
I know some things are mandatory like IV. I did not have IV at my first delivery. I was free to move about as I pleased.
Has anyone given birth at Lenox Hill? If so, how was your experience?
Re: NYC Hospital Reviews
I gave birth 5 weeks ago at Mt Sinai. It was medication free but I did have the IV"I case of an emergency". No one pressured me like I thought they would regarding the EPi Or anything. I would give birth there again.
I was annoyed about one thing tho- the nurses didn't like that I was moving around so much because it moved the heart rate monitor. They would keep coming in to adjust it and eventually asked me, "can you stand during your contractions?". That's a pretty ridiculous request and I laughed and said I would try. I was asked again by a different nurse some time later and I tod her straight out, "NO.". No one bothered me again after that. I think my dr may have said to leave me alone after that? I don't know really.
If anyone wants more info about my experience, I'll be glad to share.
Another positive Mt Sinai experience here!
Mine was also medication free, though they did require I have an IV also, but they didn't need to give me fluids. I was told this is required by the hospital.
The nurses were wonderful. Some of achieving a medication free labor and delivery can be attributed to my incredible doula and having a supportive obstetrician.
Good luck!
I gave birth at Roosevelt 4 years ago. Wanted to give birth in the birthing center but it was full when I went into labor which is extremely common since there are so few rooms. Ended up on regular labor and delivery and had a med-free birth. They don't require an IV- just had a hep lock in the case that an IV is needed. I was able to move around aside from the intermittent monitoring which was every 1/2 hour. My L& D nurse was pretty clueless it seemed, I wasn't impressed and the post-partum care was horrendous.
This time around I am giving birth at NY Presbyterian Columbia because that is closer to home. Also planning med free if possible and my doc said they will just do a hep lock as well.
I had a doula the first time around, but she ended up with another woman in labor and only arrived as I started pushing so this time I'm just taking my chances and doing it without a doula.
Nechie, I'm going to check out SLR on Tuesday. Who was your OB or midwife?
