If you lost a lot of weight BF'ing, but have since weaned...

What did your weight do after weaning?

I weigh less than before I had my youngest and I attribute some of that to BF'ing. I'm close to weaning (I think) and I'm wondering if stopping will make me gain weight or will help me lose the last bit of flab around my hips and legs. I know everybody is different but I'm curious what the trend is.

So, if you were one of those who dipped below post-partum weight while BF'ing, what happened when you weaned?

  • I stopped bf'ing about 3.5 weeks ago and haven't noticed any change yet (was/am 6-7 lbs below pre-pg weight). But I am also conscious of the fact that I'm no longer feeding another human being, so I am watching what I eat a little more closely.

  • After 10 months of BF, I was 18 pounds under my pre-pregnancy weight (which was overweight to begin with)  and maintained that for about 2 months after weaning.  In the last 3 months, I've gained about 10 pounds.  I got spoiled eating whatever I felt like while nursing.  So now I'm back to watching my calories so I can lose those 10 pounds again and more after that.  Hope that helps.
  • I had the same issue and I'm still nursing. I've lost 60 lbs while nursing (25 under pre-pregnancy weight now - and I wasn't big to begin with). I'm down to 3 feedings a day and it's finally stabilizing. I'm interested to see what others say.

  • I only BF for 6 weeks and in that time frame I lost all my baby weight and then some. About a month or two after, I gained it ALL back and then some! I'm just now at my pre-pregnancy weight and thats due to hard core calorie counting and exercise!

  • I've always been fairly thin, and BFing took all my baby weight off easily. After weaning, I gained 15 lbs in about a month and I cannot get rid of it.

  • After I weaned I gained about 5lbs more than I had weighed before getting pregnant.

  • I BF until LO was 14 months and I was down to about 10 pounds under my pre pregnancy weight. A couple months after I stopped I have now gained about 15 pounds. Not fun. I also got used to eating whatever I wanted while I was nursing and now I can't do that.

  • I was about 3 pounds under pre-PG weight when I weaned and I gained 4 pounds back over the next 3 months. Darn it. I'm maybe one pound under pre-pg weight now, but I weaned in February and it's taken some work.
  • I lost all of my baby weight within a year of having DS. When I went back to work when DS was 15 months and was nursing only once a day, I managed to gain 20 pounds back. I'm not sure if it was eating more crap or weaning, or a combination of the two. I've tried the 30 Day Shred, watching what I eat and some weight training, but if anything, I'm GAINING weight! I really really need to be much more strict with what I eat. I'm also half praying that my bloodwork this week shows a thyroid problem that would excuse my weight gain. I doubt it though. Le sigh.
  • I lost most of the weight during the first 2 months while BFing.  Once I stopped I lost even more than my pre-baby weight. I started off thin and am now even thinner.

I lost all my baby weight plus 7 pounds within 2 week of deliverity and BF'ing. Then, my weight normalized and stayed. I wanted to lose more weight anyway so I started WW - they don't give any more points for bfing once your child is on solids. In any case, I have not gained weight since weaning, but I was also doing WW so I lost weight because I was trying.  I've read that once your child is doing solids, even if you are pumping/bf'ing it doesn't do much to your weight either way. I've found this to be true.

  • I lost my baby weight by 8 weeks PP, and lost a few more after that.. I EP'd for 9 months, and after I stopped pumping I gained about 4-5lbs right away,

  • I got down to pre-pg weight pretty quick. But then we weaned at 7 months. I gained at least 10 lbs almost immediately.

  • I got to five pounds over pre-preg weight by my 6 week appt.  However, I held on to the remaining weight until I weaned at 14 mos.  I now weigh exactly pre-preg weight.

When I weaned C at 15 months I was 5 lbs below my pre-pregnancy weight.  For the last few months I was only bfing 1-2 times/day so I didn't think I would gain, but I regained the 5 lbs. and was back to my normal weight within 2 months of weaning.

  • I lost all 30 pounds of pregnancy weight while breastfeeding - relatively quickly.

    When I weaned I lost 5 more.

  • I was 10 lbs below my pre-pregnancy weight when DS was 6 mos. I haven't weighed that little since grade 8. I'm petite to begin with.

I gained 5lbs back as he ate more solids. Since completely weaning at 14mos I've gained a few more back. I'm still about 4 lbs under pre-pregnancy weight.

I found after weaning my appetite really decreased. When I was BFing I was hungry all the time and ate a lot. Now I eat like I did before getting pregnant. I also exercise but not nearly as much as I used to. I was worried I would gain a lot back but it's been okay. I just can't eat like I did while BFing.

  • I lost all my weight plus about 5 lbs around 9 months. Then, around 18 months - when LO dropped a few sessions and I night weaned - I gained about 10 back! I'm still fighting to get it off, and find that I cannot eat whatever I want anymore.

  • I was about 10 lbs under my PP weight after BF'ing for 16.5 months.  Gained it all back within 4 months.  I am now back to exactly what I weighed when I got pregnant.
  • I lost all but 10 pounds while BFing, then lost those 10 pounds after weaning DD. It helped that I re-learned portion control quickly after weaning because I was eating more than I ever eat while BFing. I think shrinking from an H cup to DD also helped me lose weight. I still have horrible belly flab but that is my own fault for not exercising enough. Walking just doesn't help tone up my stomach.

  • I EBF for a year and lost all the baby weight.  I gained about 10 lbs. back on after stopping and then got pregnant a few months later.  So, it has sucked starting this pregnancy at a higher weight than last time.
  • Once I went back to work and we started supplementing I gained 20 lbs. I had hit my PP weight by 4 months post partum. I just re-lost it. I was so pissed. I really had to rein in my eating.
