Cloth Diapering

How would you supplement the Jillian's Drawers sampler?

We're planning on going the CD route, and because we're so new at this, also using the sampler from Jillian's Drawers.  I've read a lot about CD-ing, but I still feel totally clueless.  I realize the sampler probably won't provide me enough diapers unless I want to be doing laundry twice a day.  But without knowing what I'm going to like, it's hard to know how to supplement the sampler.  Any recommendations?

  • I would choose some other diapers/brands that you are interested in trying.  I am not doing a trial but I have 2 or 3 of about 8 different diapers to try on LO when the time comes.

  • A dozen prefolds and a couple extra covers. We use all pockets now, but for the newborn stage I liked prefolds the best. Plus, they're cheap.

  • Yeah, I would actually recommend doing the sampler for larger sizes than newborn. Stick with inexpensive and efficient prefolds and covers for newborn and when your LO gets larger and more wiggly/mobile the trial/sampler will give you a much better idea of what will fit and work for you in the long haul. Newborns are just so darn tiny and so different to diaper than a 6 month and older baby.

  • We decided to wait until after we were settled in with LO before doing our cloth diaper trial, which turned out to be around weeks 3-4. So we used sposies for the first few weeks and we have been using them when our trial diapers are in the wash.

In our case, not all of the diapers in the trial have been a good fit throughout the time that we have had them. LO was a 7 lb. beanbpole for the first week, so he could still wear the XS prefolds, but he quickly outgrew them.  At the other end of the spectrum the BG 4.0 pocket diaper is huge on him, and I only started using it during the last week of the trial. And I immediately ruled out the AiO they sent us (different than the one listed on the webpage), because the way it fit around his legs, it tended to leak out of the side. So realistically we've only been able to use 8-10 of the diapers at any given time during the trial.

You are correct, the number of diapers in the trial will get you through maybe a day or a night but not both. But the point of the sampler is to help you figure out what you like, so why plunk down money before you know? I was also eager to do cloth from the start but in retrospect glad we waited a few weeks. For one thing, LO has gotten really squirmy lately, so that helps us be realistic about what it's like to fasten a prefold on a squirmy baby. Also we are getting out of the house more, and for longer stretches of time, so we have been able to try using cloth while we are out running errands, etc. I learned that I like pockets better than I thought I would.

If you are BF'ing I highly recommend getting a few Kissaluv fitteds. These are by far my favorite diapers in the trial. Excellent for containing runny poo!
