1st Trimester

First Prenatal appointment...at 11 weeks?

I called and my doctor has me doing blood work June 25th (a week from today) and my first prenatal appointment isn't until July 11th? I would be anywhere from 9 to 11 weeks along by then...basically at the end of the first trimester before even seeing a doctor at all. Should I be concerned about this? I'm upset because lots of friends and family got in to people way sooner. My sister, for instance, has a photo of the baby at 7 weeks! I'd love to get in sooner and feel more assured. Sadness.

Re: First Prenatal appointment...at 11 weeks?

  • It is pretty common for the first appt. to be between 8-12 weeks depending on your history and the Dr. you see. I had b/w done immediately due to a previous loss, but they didn't schedule my first appt. until 10 weeks.

  • Every office is different.  I had an appt. at 5 weeks for bloodwork and a pap.  Then another appt. at 8 weeks for bloodwork and vaginal ultrasound.  At 12 weeks I'll have another ultrasound and a visit with the doctor.

as long as you have no concerns i don't see the problem

i won't go in until I'm almost 11 weeks but this is my second....not sure.

i am looking at it positively that after my appt i'll be more comfortable telling people cause i'll be almost 12 weeks anyway and the Dr will have checked me out further along.

With my first, I made my appt when I found out I was pregnant, and they wanted to see me at 9 weeks.

This time, I haven't even called, because I know that I'll just have to wait . . .

Pretty normal, I know most of my friends have been this way too.

  • As pp said it just depends.  My first appointment wasn't until 10w.  I remember with my first it would have been unnerving to wait that long but, this time I was like great, fewer appointments to drag my DD to.
  • That sounds about right.  I will be just shy of 10 weeks at my first appointment.

It's common to do it that way. My OBs office is b/t 8-10 weeks for the first appointment.

  • My first appointment is when I'm 9 weeks, but the office specified this would be a "talking" appointment with a nurse just to get bloodwork, take my family history, do an exam and pap, etc. - i.e., no ultrasound.  They have me coming in 2 weeks later, when I'm nearly 12 weeks, for my first ultrasound.  I'm with you, OP - truthfully I'm a little disappointed I won't see anything till that time.  But as a lot of other ladies on the Bump have reminded me, if this is your first pregnancy and/or you have no history of losses or other problems, its the norm, and we should probably be thankful.

  • I've signed up for a midwife and they booked my first appointment at 11 weeks. I guess this would be an intro and chat and then I would be scheduled for blood work/US, etc.  I was surprised that I had to wait that long but I guess it makes sense.

  • That's not abnormal.  It is hard to wait because it's nice getting that reassurance from a doctor, but it's definitely nothing to be concerned about.

  • this is very common unless you have a history of problems. With my first two, i had my first apt at 10weeks, i have since had a m/c so this time they saw me at 6wks, but im going back this week for the first time since then (11wks). So it is normal, on the plus side....it will make your pregnancy fly by when you do start going (instead of the first tri dragging on)! GOOD LUCK! and CONGRATS!

  • I wont be having my first appt until 10 1/2 weeks also.  I wont even have blood work or anything until then.  Makes the days go by slower!  It is my first time to go to this midwife but they said they dont see patients until 9-11 weeks.
  • Where I live its common for the first appt to be around 10 weeks or so.  I went to my first at 11 w 4 days.  I think anywhere in there is normal.  Some women may be seen earlier if there is a history of complications etc.
  • I didn't see a midwife until 10 weeks the first time I was pregnant and I only called them because I thought I might have miscarried (and I had). This time I'll probably ask to be seen around 8 weeks because I'm anxious. If I think something is going on, I'll call before then of course but for now probably around 8 weeks. If I hadn't miscarried I would have waited until 10-12 weeks.

  • That's typical when there are no concerns and you are not high risk.  My doctor's office starts prenatal appointments at 12 weeks.
