What the H am I supposed to do with the carseat?

Help me figure out the logistics of traveling with a baby in Boston and NYC; specifically what the H am I supposed to do with the bloody carseat if I'm going to need to take a taxi or something? Am I just gonna be stuck lugging it all over the city? I was just planning on either using the Beco carrier or my $3 (I don't care if something happens to it during our travels) umbrella stroller to push DD around in if needed but the carseat is creating such a problem for me.

  • It's a personal decision but taxis and police cruisers are the two vehicles exempt from carseat laws. Technically you could not use one and be legal (in Ohio) in a taxi. I would not and have taken DS in the carrier to strap him in. I just don't feel it's safe even if it isn't against the law....taxi drivers are crazy drivers! I guess if you could have him in a Bijorn type carrier and then seatbelted yourself in it might be safer than nothing at all? That would combat the G Force argument of not being able to hold onto a baby in a crash but I'm not sure if your body weight wouldn't squish baby at impact.

I am from Boston. You should be able to take the T everywhere you want to go, including the airport.

As for NYC, that might be more difficult. If you could plan your trip really well and not need a taxi, I would leave the seat at home. If you think you will need a taxi, I would take it in one of those bags with wheels made for travel.

  • Is the issue with your carseat the fact that its a pain to carry while traveling? Or that you don't want to have to go from the airpot to hotel? I'll be traveling by myself to NYC soon and I recently looked up some rules for flying with LO. You can check one peice of baby equipment for free (carseat) and have one with you in the plane for free too (umbrella stroller). I'm not sure what that carrier looks like, but if its mainly cloth and can be folded and will not be checked in that should save you one $ part of it. I personally am planning to travel with the regular stroller. NYC is way too much walking for me, so the umbrella stroller just wont cut it. Also, then I wont have to worry about carrying that carseat.  Good luck!

  • Both Boston and NYC have awesome public transportation.  Personally, I would just rely on that instead of worrying about the car seat.

  • My issue is not the plane travel but city travel. I plan to use the subway system as much as possible to get around but it's the getting to the subway station from where I'll be staying that poses the problem. I'm staying at a friend's house in Queens. I've stayed there before and know where they are in relation to the subway-not close enough to just walk. I don't know how comfortable I'll feel taking a taxi without strapping DD in her carseat, but I also don't want to be lugging the carseat all over the city either.
