I checked into the hospital Thursday night at 10 P.M. to start an
induction with cytotec. The pitocin was started at 7
A.M. Friday morning, and I labored until about 1 P.M. before I was
dilated enough to get the epidural. A narcotic and some time in the
jacuzzi helped with the pain of the contractions, but they were pretty
intense. Unfortunately, the anesthesiologist placed the epidural too
low, and I got no relief from it - made my legs heavy without the
accompanying loss of pain. So, they gave me an intrathecal which was
amazing and took away the pain immediately and then replaced the
epidural, but didn't connect it until after the intrathecal had worn
off. So, I was pretty doped up. But, when the epidural was put around 2
or so (my memory is fuzzy) I was just at 4 cm. After it was placed they
upped the pitocin, and the next time they checked me at around 3:45/4
or so I was at 8 cm. That's when they called the doctor and I was
complete pretty shortly thereafter. The doctor said I pushed for about
40 minutes - DH said 50. It was hard work, and I ended up with a third degree tear. I did not cry though DH did (favorite memory: looking up at my husband wiping away tears as I'm holding our newly born son on my chest). I just held him
for a good hour before they finally took him for weights and
measurements.
We had a very frustrating experience with the
nursing care in the hospital and came home Saturday night around 8 PM after
doing some wheeling and dealing with the on-call pediatrician regarding
Nolan's difficulties with nursing. Basically, we agreed to use donor
milk and a supplemental nursing system before following up with a
lactation consultant at my OB's office or the pediatrician's office, and
after I explained I had a hospital grade pump and my own mother at
home to help. We are still figuring out breastfeeding but yesterday and
today have gone much, much better, in part due to the fact that I have
actually able to get some solid (if brief) stetches of sleep. I am
extremely sore, especially in my arms (the doctor had my grab his hands
when pushing and it was pretty physical), but just over the moon in
love with my little guy.
Re: Nolan Eugene is here!
Congrats on your son! BF was really hard for me too in the begining because DS was so small and I have huge boobies so getting a latch was difficult.
The Pedi we saw at our first checkup is also a board certified Lactation Consultant and she was just amazing! She gave me so much good info and showed me a hold that is better for bigger chested women. If you're still having difficulties I would highly suggest talking to a LC, they know their stuff!
