C-sections

2 weeks post c section symptoms

FTM with c section 2 weeks ago and I'm still having the following symptoms:

- dark blood with some bright red at times, but not filling pad in 1-2 hours

- foul smelling blood- started 2nd week

- swollen area on one part of incision

- pain in incision area every so often

- after sitting for long period of time, small clots when I urinate

- pain in incision area when urinating

- first few days home bowel movements were normal now it takes forever to get a BM out

- no fever

I've called the doctor twice and he says I'm doing too much and need to relax and all that stuff will subside.  But when I research online, so many of those symptoms at 2 weeks mean possible infection.  I'm going to call and request an appointment tomorrow but wanted to see if any of you all experienced this.

Re: 2 weeks post c section symptoms

  • I've had two c-sections (#3 will be in December) and I think this all sounds relatively normal.

I bled on and off for about 6 weeks both times and it was the same as what you described.  I also had small clots (if they become large, I think you should definitely call).

It also started to have a smell, but I think that maybe is just from tissue and stuff cleaning out?  I'm not sure, but I had the same thing.

I don't remember any swelling though.  Is it red or warm (I mean, I know it's still fresh, so it might be kinda hard to tell).

I also had a little bit of pain off and on for a couple weeks, especially if I vacuumed, went up and down the stair a lot, etc.

I also had a hard time passing stool and it hurt like heck to push.  If you aren't taking a softener, I would totally recommend one.  That might be contributing to your pain in the incision area.

So all this to say, I think it's totally normal.  But if you aren't comfortable, I would make an appointment for extra reassurance!

  • I think the doctor's right - sounds like you're over doing it.  I would have a lot of those symptoms when I did too much. Take it easy. Housework can wait, and put DH to work.

  • Ditto pp's.  That all sounds normal, and like you might be overdoing it.  I had bleeding on & off for 5-6 weeks after my c/s with DS, and there was definitely an odd smell for a while.  Please keep in mind that you've just had major abdominal surgery, and you should not expect everything to be perfect or back to normal in 2 weeks.  There's a reason that the doc's don't medically release you for 8 weeks after a c/s.

If you start running a fever, or start passing large clots, then make an appointment - but otherwise, wait for your 6w postpartum visit.

  • Pain in your incision? Your 2 weeks PP you are going to still have pain and sensitivity. That entire area was just cut open. 16 months here and I still have irritation with my scar. If you have pain near your incision when peeing it may be because of your bladder. For a few weeks, maybe even a couple months, after my c/s peeing was not normal whatsoever and my OB essentially told me everything has been disturbed and irritated so it will take awhile for things to calm down(or something like that...it's been a while). As far as the swollen area you may be doing too much or, if it is on one side, that is where they tied you off and you have a bump and it isn't necessarily swollen.

In regards to the clots, if you are sitting or lying down everything collects in your vagina and that would be why when you get up to go to the bathroom you see the clots.

ETA: I also want to add that your discharge(lochia) is made of up mucus, blood and tissue which is why is smells not so awesome.

  • Everything you describes sounds normal. Don't google your symptoms. Trust your doctor. If you start getting a fever or your instinct starts telling you something is really wrong, go to the doctor.

For the foul smelling blood you might try trimming the hair down there (if you haven't already), using a feminine cleanser (NOT a douche, just a shower gel type of soap externally), and Johnson and Johnson's cornstarch powder. Also, some feminine product companies sell ph balances personal wipes, so that might be better than dry toilet paper sometimes. Remember, it's summer and you're still going through a hormone shift so things get sweaty down there whether you're bleeding or not. KWIM?

Even with all that, the lochia is still going to have a distinct odor but it shouldn't be overpowering.
