Where do I start in finding child care for 1 day/week?

A few weeks ago I decided that it was time for Emma to not come to work with me anymore on my one day in the office each week. It just wasn't working anymore and I was spending more time corralling her than I was doing my work. The next day DH moved to a temporary project on 2nd shift and has been able to stay home with her on Tuesdays while I go to work. Well, that little arrangement will soon be ending and I need to find a permanent arrangement for care for her that one day a week.

But I feel absolutely clueless on how to go about that! Ideally someone I know would be able to come to our house so I can leave for work at normal time and not have to drag food and cloth diapers and everything else with me - that was part of the reason of not wanting to take her to work anymore. It's just too much with being pregnant and carrying DD and all her stuff plus my purse and lunch and work bag. We don't have family close by and all the people that come to mind would only be available occasionally - a collage student only home for the summer, a snowbird who goes south for the winter, a teacher who goes back to work in the fall, friends who have their own hands full with their own kids and probably wouldn't want to stay at our house or be able to commit to every week. I don't trust anything like craig's list or the newspaper to find random people. Does anyone have recommendations for a reputable search engine or anything?

With it being only one day, would it really be worth it to look into a day care center? I'd still have to tote her stuff but at least it'd be something I could depend on.

Sorry this turned into a little bit of a vent or something, it's hard trusting someone else with your baby!!

  • We used care.com to find our PT nanny.  It worked out great for us.  I posted a job posting and got a bunch of responses, weeded it down and interviewed maybe 3 or 4.  For a small fee you can get access to background checks etc.

Another site is Sittercity but I didn't use that one at all so can't vouch for it.

    Thank you!

And thank you to anyone else who responds tonight. I'm off to bed now...

  • My friends found wonderful people on sittercity.com.  They are like family members now.

  • Some daycare centers offer part time slots, but they will be more than just 1/5 the FT price because they are sacrificing a FT slot to take your child.  Most places I know you need to pay for at least two days even if you don't need two. Maybe that will give you a day to run errands if you want, have some "me time" or WFH without having to corral you DD there?

I know moms on the WM board use sittercity and care.com for nannies, I'm sure they have PT positions too.

  • do you have any local Mothers Day Out places? I think that is 2 days a week but pretty cheap and usually at Churches.
  • I've used care.com and sittercity.com for part time care and it works great.  I got a lot of responses from both sites.

  • we found our in-home daycare through craigslist.  i know that she does take some kids one day a week (i guess they don't count toward her total), but that is a situation where you would have to take dd to the provider rather than having someone come to you.

  • I think most of the babies at our center are PT. Our center is able to flex teacher schedules to make it work.

  • Thanks guys! So, I just went to care.com and made an account. It looks like I'm supposed to post that I'm "hiring" and then applicants will contact me? I was hoping to be able to look through profiles and find someone to contact myself. Does anyone know if that's possible?

NM! I found the hiding "skip for now" button...

  • Care.com is a good site- I used to offer tutoring services through them.  There is a way for you to initiate contact, but I don't remember how, sorry :(

I also wanted to add that it wouldn't hurt to call around to good daycares in your area.  They will all probably have a day "drop-in" rate, although I found most were fairly pricey.  After calling around enough, I found a really nice daycare that would take C whenever we needed them to for a very reasonable day rate (they actually took their weekly rate and divided it by 5).  This spring, he had to go twice a week.  They kept a basket with his things (formula, bottles, sippy, diapers/wipes, and a change of clothes) just like they did the daily kids, so I never had to lug things back and forth.

If calling daycares, I suggest a more regional one.  I found the national chains were tied to their corporate policies on rates for part timers and sometimers.  The one we use only has locations is privately owned, so they were able to bend some policies to accommodate us price wise.  It's worked out beautifully.

  • Also, ask friends who have children in your area who they use and if they are happy.  If so, call and ask about PT.  If they don't offer a one day a week option, ask them if they know anyone in the area who would. An in-home daycare might be a good choice.  Just be sure to check resources and safety compliances.  Also, what about posting something at church?  I know that some women who no longer have young children might jump at the chance to watch a LO in your home one day a week.  Are there any local colleges?  Try calling and asking them if they have an education department or any students who would be interested. (A bonus:  if they are teacher candidates, they most likely will have been finger printed and background checked).

Hi there, this is Perri from the Care.com Member Care Team! I saw your post and just wanted to clear up any confusion that you may have about the site. As someone looking to hire, you do have the ability to either post a job and get applicants, or just create the profile and actively search through the available providers in your area. By going to the search bar at the top of your profile and adjusting the type of care you?re looking for, the zip code and the distance from your house, you are able to pull up all of the profiles that fall within that criteria. In search results, you are also able to read through the providers past experience, take a look at their availability, view their last login date, and check to see if they have references listed, reviews written, etc. Contact the members that you are most interested in, and begin your search to actively hire a suitable caregiver! I hope that this helps. Best of luck with your search!
