Rice cereal vs. oatmeal

I mentioned last week that DD got super gassy after adding rice cereal to her night bottle.

So somebody suggested oatmeal instead. I bought some last night... I got Gerber single grain oatmeal. It shows pretty much the same ingredients and nutritional valuees as rice cereal with the same amount of iron.

I'm assuming due to the fiber in oatmeal the baby is less likely to get constipated/gassy? Did the wheat contents make you nervous regarding potential allergies etc?

Sorry if I'm overanalysing I'm just so hesitant now to give DD anything else but her formula. But it is time as she's waking up at night to eat so I think she is going to need more.

Just looking for reassurance I guess....

 THANKS!

Re: Rice cereal vs. oatmeal

  • I read an article a few weeks ago saying that rice cereal provides no nutritional value for LO.  So I asked my pedi last week and he agreed.  He said oatmeal was the way to go.

  • We skipped rice cereal entirely and went straight to oatmeal.

Also - my pedi recommended not putting cereal in the bottle and going to a bowl and a spoon right away. It can be a bit messy, but baby is much less likely to aspirate and they will need to learn to eat from a spoon at some point anyways, whether you plan to BLW (they will need to use utensils eventually!) or spoon-feed purees.

    1 lap, 5 IUIs = 4 BFNs and 1 c/p
    2 IVFs, 2 FETs = 1 BFN, 1 c/p, 1 ectopic and finally a sticky BFP in May 2011!

My pedi said not to do spoon feeding until she can sit on her own completely... Does that really make that big of a difference? She can sit just fine in her high chair...

I love my pedi but I think that at times he's just going by those old typical rules that aren't necessarily accurate or need to be followed 100%....

As long as your LO has good head control and can sit assisted she can be spoon fed.

Yeah this isn't true. We just ordered a high chair which should arrive in the next couple of days. In the meantime, we've been feeding DS with a spoon in his bouncy chair.
