Transitioning to WCM

So I was reading the thread about transitioning from formula to milk & noticed some moms have already started transitioning before their LO is 1. How common is this? We have not tried giving DS WCM yet because his pedi said to wait until after his 1st bday. I was just curious as to how many have transitioned already & who has waited.

I plan on starting at 11 mos so we can be finished at 12. Dd already gets dairy - yogurt and cottage cheese.

  • My pedi said we could really make the switch at 11 months, but I still have a can of formula left so I've been mixing them together (2/3 formula, 1/3 milk, now the opposite) so that by her 1st birthday (tomorrow!) I'll just be giving milk.

  • Our pedi said we could "cheat" a little and start during the 11th month. I'm still nursing 2x a day though, so I'll probably keep doing that and transition one of his daytime cups to whole milk at a time midway through the 11th month.

  • I just asked our Pedi at her 9m appt and she said NO WCM until after 1st birthday.  They said some babies' digestive systems cannot break it down and there is no way to tell at what age a baby is ready but based off of studies, most, if not all, babies are ready at 12m.

  • Our doctor said to give one bottle of WCM a day at 10 months, 2 at 11 months, and then all milk at 12 months.  I am really not comfortable with that so I decided to slowly give an ounce of milk in her bottle.  So right now she gets 6 oz of formula and 1 oz of milk in every bottle and she gets three bottles a day.  We will slowly increase by one ounce ever 1-2 weeks.

  • I started a week ago, when DS turned 11 months. I did this for DD as well. He has 2oz of his bottle replaced by WCM. after a week we will add 2 more oz. so 4 total. The last week I'l only do 1 extra oz so he will still get 1ozof formula and keep doing that unti it's all gone. He will be fully on WCM by 1. 1 month of weaning can't hurt in my opinion. Our pedi said it's fine to do it this way.

  • I really don't think it is common unless you live in Canada (where the health ministry says it is okay to switch at 9 months).  Your LO could stay on formula for 2 years.  No need to rush.

We're waiting til I talk to the pedi. Which is July 2nd, and his birthday is Tuesday. Not really sure what she's going to say though. I'm not comfortable switching yet I don't think, unless she says something super reassuring, because DS doesn't eat very much. I don't think you can expect every kid to be ready diet wise to make the switch right at twelve months.
  • I started at 11 months by giving him about 3-4oz of WCM at his 3 meals and dropping a bottle. He now gets 3 bottles of formula plus 3 servings of WCM. And within the next month i'm going to try and lower his 11am bottle to 4oz and add some kind of snack with it and so on. Idk I think pedi's have a CYA attitude because there are people are there who will over due it and give their baby WCM at like 4 months to save money, i don't think in a months time something dramatic is going to happen and all of a sudden his body will handle WCM any different. If your baby is a picky eater then staying on formula is a good thing, also formula is a good source of iron too. Anyways I think I will be stuck with the morning bottle and night bottle for a while

  • We aren't transitioning to WCM.  Cow's milk is for cows.

He'll be on BM until about 15 months or so, and then we'll introduce coconut milk as its fat is most like BM fat.  And, even then it won't be his main source of nutrition/fat/calories.

alrighty then!   This reeks of superiority...if you would have left out the "cow's milk is for cows" then I would have been able to just look past this...but seriously, yikes.

Absolutely no superiority complex.  Just an alternative way of thinking -- against the grain if you will.

Cow's milk is literally for cows.  That's how we view dairy.

" Cow's milk is for cows".  Wow! Was this statement really necessary to answer this post?

OP: I'm starting to introduce WCM in a sippy cup, only about 2 oz everyday.  Not planning on giving DD a full bottle until after 12m.

  • I hate to ask...because it seems like it should be obvious.  What is WCM?  I am guessing whole cow's milk?  Can't be, right?  Thanks!
  • Cow's milk is just for cow's, huh?? MOO!
