Your opinions on bumpers...

We haven't used a bumper since DS has been in his crib, but now that he is more mobile he is getting his arms and legs stuck between the rails all the time.  Is there an age where it becomes more acceptable to use a bumper or should I invest in a breathable bumper?  Opinions...

Re: Your opinions on bumpers...

  • We have actually used the bumper from the day we moved her to the crib at 2 months. We have had no problems, and dd is mobile enough that she can easily move away from the side.

  • We have never owned bumpers.  Contemplated breathable ones when DD1 was little.
  • We've always used a bumper, well since she moved to her crib at 3 1/2 months. She's never had a problem with it and now rolls all over the crib so I don't worry because she can move if she can't breathe.
  • We got the breathable bumper when DD started getting her arms and legs stuck in the crib.  I think it was only like $35 at BRU.  I really like it.
  • We put the bumper back in when DS was around 7 months old. he kept getting his legs stuck real bad so we put it back in.
  • A sleep specialist from our hospital came and spoke to our parenting group. She recommended a breathable bumper over no bumper and definitely over a regular bumper for once DC becomes mobile. She said they have a lot of injuries come in to the hospital from babies getting limbs stuck and that breathable bumpers were great and safe (and as a bonus can help them feel safe in their crib as they become more aware of their surroundings). The problem w/ regular bumpers at this age is they can start to use them to stand in bed and push up over.

  • We've also used a regular bumper since day 1 and had no problems.  If your baby can roll, I'm fairly certain that he could get himself away from the bumper if need be.

  • As DS became more mobile in his crib I did get a breathable bumper. It saved his little arms and legs many times. I since have taken in out and put the normal padded bumper in because he trashes his head around at night sometimes and was bonking his head and waking himself up.  I would have liked to keep the breathable on though, he can't climb that one!Smile
  • We have had a bumper since day 1. For a couple of months we used a breathable bumper (when DS was rolling, but not overly mobile) becuase without it he was gettinghis arms and legs stuck. After he gained the ability to move around we replaced the breathable bumper with his regular one because he was hitting his head all the time! When he tries to stand, the bumper does a good job of smooshing down, so I am not concerned about it helping him climb out.
  • We bought a breathable bumper when DD started getting her limbs stuck outside the crib.  I didn't want to use a padded bumper because the SIDS alliance recommends against it.  Would DD have been fine?  Probably.  But why take a chance when a good alternative exists?

  • We didn't use anything until DS started rolling around and getting his limbs stuck. Now we use the Cozy Wedge, and it works great!
  • We've used a regular bumper since day 1. I'm now getting ready to take it out because Joseph is way too interested in it. He keeps untying the ribbons and undoing the velcro and taking stuff apart. I'm torn between leaving it to give him something to do, (He can entertain himself with that stupid bumper for about 45 minutes in the morning. The video monitor is finally making itself useful.)  or taking it out because it's a PITA to put back together every freaking morning and I'm afraid he'll use it to create a ladder, shimmy out the window and disappear into the night.
