Preemies

How did you do it with preemies with problems.??....help please

How did all you preemie moms who have baby with problems do it when your baby was born. Did you quit your job and stay home so you can care for your baby? Did you work part-time? Did you go back to work and put baby in daycare. I'm in a dilemma and don't want ANYONE caring for my son but me. I'm just need some input please on how all of you handled it with work and caring for your baby.

  • I took time off work when DS came home from the NICU (he was there for 4 months.)  But I had to go back to work full-time.  I didn't have the option to quit work to care for him.  My SIL watched him for a long time and now I have babysitter.  I was uncomfortable to take him to someone I didn't know, but her daughter was also a preemie so she understands his special needs.  Just do what you feel is best for you and your DC.
  • we downsized so i could quit my job and stay home. no more fancy vacations, we traded in our cars for cheaper ones and redid our budget. i have no regrets

  • I had to quit my job and school when I was preg, doctors orders.? ?I plan to go back to school in January, but not work.? I am hoping to find someone to come to our house and watch Brendan while I am in class.? We don't have any family nearby though :(? and they are the ones I would want to watch him.?
  • I dropped out of my graduate program when the boys were born, because there is just no way I could have put them in DC during RSV season. I'm still a SAHM, but I'm trying to get back to school p/t in the fall of 2009.

We've had to rearrange our budget and cut out luxury things like vacations, nice clothes, daytrips, etc, but it is COMPLETELY worth it, and we have no regrets.

  • I'm on a leave of absence fron work. I traded in my car... we refi'ed trhe house, cut out extras, etc..
  • DH and I work opposite shifts so that one of us is always with him.

  • I am on an extended leave of absence from my teaching job. I couldn't put Brandon in daycare because of RSV and it would have cost as much as I was making to have an in home babysitter. Plus with all of the doctors appointments that I have to bring Brandon to I would have had to take off work at least once a week or more. I am going to go back next September.

  • There's no way one of us could quit our jobs. We live in a very high cost of living area and one of us would have to make double what we make now to afford living on one income.

DS is in an in-home daycare with only one other baby right now, although that is not working out. I am likely going to put him in a daycare run by our county for medically fragile children. I would definately see if your county has one of these. They have nurses on staff with the babies at all times and very specific guidelines for preventing the spread of infection.

If you are/will be working with EI, our EI program has child development specialists that can match you with a daycare to suit your needs.

Anyway, the whole thing sucks. Marino was in daycare for 8 days and he already has a cold (but no fever or breathing issues yet). Its very painful but we have no choice but to have him in daycare. I did take 19 weeks off of work before we started.

  • Our original plan was for me to be a SAHM and so we lived off DH's salary for two years and banked my salary in savings for this reason.  Then we had special needs preemies 11 weeks early and we live in a high cost of living area close to DC where daycare for one normal baby is about $250 to 350 per week (times 2 for twins). The cost of daycare here is equal to my well paying salary.  In the end I had to quit anyway, but I don't know what we would have done if we didn't have the incom to support it all.
