throwing food on the floor

Very soon after putting LO in his high chair, he starts to pick up pieces of food and drop them on the floor. I don't think he is done or full, its just more fun to throw the food down than eat it. How do you deal with this? I take it away, but he isn't eating much. I try giving the tray back in a few minutes and he throws all the food again.

We have wall to wall carpeting in our dining area, so it is driving me crazy!

Re: throwing food on the floor

  • I have been trying to correct her behavior by telling her "Audrey, no." I even will hold her arm/wrist to keep her from throwing it, but it only just started, and we are still in progress. I hope this changes for both of us.

  • He is not throwing food yet but he is picking up his plate and dumping it.  As soon as I see it coming I tell him, "The plate stays on the tray."  I will do this a couple of times before it turns to "No."  After a couple of no's I just take it away figuring he is done.  He too is not eating very much right now but pedi was not concerned.  She said they eat like birds right now.  And if they don't eat alot one day they may just make up for it the next day and eat a ton.  I have started paying more attention to this and so far it has been true.  Good luck to you and I hope this behavior ends soon.

I would try feeding him at all different times, and after I say no once, if it's something I can take away, like food, I take it away and meal time is over.
  • I am having this same issue. I don't take his food away because the boy would end up never eating. I hold his hand when he's about to drop something and tell him we don't throw food, we eat food and put the food in my mouth. I do this over and over and over again throughout the meal.
  • Ugh, this drives me crazy!!! We tell him "no" and mime putting food in our own mouths and that sometimes works. If it's the end of the meal, we just tell him "all done!" and take him out.

  • I deal with it by feeding her by hand :-/ I do give her some food during every meal to handle on her own, but it always ends up on the floor. I tell her no, and tell her to put it in the mouth (then touch her mouth with my finger), but she still doesn't get it. Sigh. It'll happen at some point.
