Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Blowing raspberries while eating

DS suddenly loves blowing raspberries while he's eating. He's even learned to look down at his bib and the tray to watch the food particles fly out of his mouth. Confused I try not to react, so it doesn't seem to be a boundary-testing behavior or a game that he wants to play with anyone but himself, but it's messy and distracts him from finishing his meals. Will he likely get bored/distracted with this in a few days, or should I actually be trying to discourage it somehow?

Re: Blowing raspberries while eating

  • My son does this often while BFing, usually when he's in a good mood.  I don't know how to discourage it, I usually end up laughing because he finds it quite entertaining.

DS has been doing it alllll the time the past couple of days, and I usually do laugh when he's just playing, but I'm really trying not to react when he does it while eating. Man, it's hard.

  • Omg, we are in the same boat! I try to not react or say dont do that. It doesnt help that when we visited the grandparents they encouraged it constantly. Now i can barely get her to eat normally. I told dh that if anyone encourages it again i will put food in my mouth and raspberry them!

  • DS started doing this a while ago, and I thought it was funny at first.  Then, it got annoying real fast...and messy.  So, every time he did it I said a firm "NO" and stopped feeding him, ate something myself, or just ignored him for a while (less than a minute).  Then I'd try feeding him again, if he did it again I repeated...after 2 days, he stopped doing it.

THIS! DD thinks it is the funniest thing ever and I can't help but giggle. I guess when I have sweet potatoes in my hair and eyelasher it won't be so funny anymore lol.

  • My DS also does this.  I try not to laugh or react, but it is kinda funny! Hopefully he'll get bored soon and it'll stop.

  • I thought it was funny but knew it would get annoying fast, so I started pressing the spoon to her lips when she did it.

    This, for us, too!  LOL

I usually end up stopping the session and switching sides... My mom says he does it when she's feeding him a bottle, too. I'm not sure what I'll do when he does it when we start solids.

  • My daughter does this sometimes when eating solids, especially cereal.  I tell her no firmly, stop feeding her for a minute, or press the spoon to her lips.  It has greatly decreased the amount she does it over the past week, and she gets the message after a few "No"s and continues eating normally.

This. Keep the spoon in LO's mouth when he starts to do it. Then nothing goes flying. They lose interest really fast that way.

  • My daughter does this. I have started getting a serious look on my face, pointing at her, and sternly saying no. It's starting to work but it's a process.
