February 2012 Moms

terrified of sleep training

I know its coming.  I know I have to do it.  But the idea of having to discipline her for the first time is sooooo scary.  She goes to bed fine.  I rock her and do a little pick up/put down routine maybe about 3-4 times but then she's out.  Stays asleep until 3am feeding.

It's the naps that are a mess - she catnaps for only about 30-45 mins.  The pacifier falls out and the nap is basically over.  Putting her down "sleepy but not asleep" seems just about impossible when she can't put her own pacifier in.

Eventually, we have to do it.  It will be good for her.  But I keep putting it off.

I never would have guessed that I'm such a cream puff.  I thought I was gonna be a "tough but fair" mom.  Dammit.

Re: terrified of sleep training

  • Funny you should post this ... we have just started sleep training (Ferber method) tonight!

My DS doesn't go down for the night well unless I rock/bounce him (standing up, might I add) into a deep sleep every night.  It takes at least 30 minutes after 20 minutes of nursing, and he's getting way too big and heavy unfortunately.  I have difficulty hoisting him over the crib rail and then gently place him in the crib.  It's not pretty!

Tonight, he put himself to sleep after about 25 minutes of crying and us checking in on him at timed intervals. I sort of messed up the bedtime routine, so I need to iron that out.  I don't look forward to having to do this in the middle of the night though ... I hope he just falls asleep after he nurses.

Once bedtime is smooth sailing, we'll tackle naps ...

  • My first night was rough with Ferber.  He was down until 12 am and then was up until 2:30 crying.  I went in checked him, soothed him, etc.  He then slept until 8 am.  That was Monday night.  He has slept through the night ever since from 8-7 am.  I thought I was going to have a week of tough nights but it hasn't been as bad as I thought.  He has woken up the past two days talking to himself :)

Isn't this normal?? Mine does this too. I figured it was just normal.
