XP: How to get a faster, less messy latch?

My LO had trouble latching because of sleepyness at first, but she got through that and has since latched great. NOW however, she has decided for the past few days she wants to play before she actually decides to latch. She'll open her mouth but only slightly, rub her head back and forth, latch on for a few seconds then spit everything out, wiggle her tongue around, everything except latch properly. Meanwhile I'm leaking like crazy and I have to change all the time because I soak through receiving blankets trying to keep myself clean but usually both her and I end up covered in bm!

Needless to say I am becoming a hermit because I dread having to feed her in public now! How can I get her to latch on faster? I have tried waiting until she is basically hysterical with hunger munching on her hands and fussing before I even attempt to feed her but still the same result. Help me! I am tired of smelling like spoiled milk. -_-

  • I keep a burp cloth under Lo's head. But even still, she likes to click and has done the head shaking thing too. I feel like I always smell like sour milk these days.

  • It sounds like you may have a forceful let down if your leaking that much when she pulls away, which could be why she's doing this.  I know in the beginning I had a bit of an over supply plus forceful let down problem. Ds would do what your talking about and gag and spit and sputter.

Try letting her latch for a second and then taking her off having a burp cloth or towel right there and hand express a bit until the flow slows down alittle. Plus your lo is very young in time mine learned to handle it.

You can also ask on the bfing page they are very helpful

  • Mine just learned how to kick his legs. So, every feeding we go through him kicking his legs and breaking suction, and then getting pissed because he can't get a bite. Next thing I know, he's motorboating and his face is covered in milk. We also go through this at the END of feeding when he's tired and trying not to fall asleep.

Your milk will eventually level off. In the meantime, keep doing what you're doing.

Omg! Motorboat ing!!! This literally made me LOL. I had to explain to DH what was so funny. That is exactly what it seems like sometimes. Lol

Very good advice; my lactation consultant came over today and she said this WAS my problem. I have a very strong let down and DD just can't handle it. I'm now feeding her almost fully reclined and it helps a lot. When it doesn't I just manually express about an ounce (which doesn't take long since the flow is so strong!) and then go back to the reclined position. She said it should rectify itself when my milk supply balances out to what her needs actually are. In the meantime she's just wearing a bib and I surround my breast with a receiving blanket to try to keep her as dry as possible!
