Anyone have a c-section because of Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction?

Hi everyone,

I'm going to be talking to my doctor next week about this awful, horrible, excruciating pain I have been having since I practically found out I was pregnant (yes..like 4 months now of this!). A nurse friend told me it may be Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction.  I will double-check with the doctor to see if this is what I have for sure, but upon reading about it, some say that in extreme cases, a c-section may be needed. 

I was wondering if anyone had Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction and had to have a c-section as a result?  Can anyone give me any insight? Kind of nervous!

    I did, although it is not necessary.  SPD feels like someone is trying to pry your pubic bone off, or is standing on it.  I actually thought I broke my pubic bone until they told me what it was.  So if that's what you have I'm sorry...it sucks.  I did some research and saw that, in severe cases, a vaginal birth can be difficult and cause a longer recovery for the mother (plus the possible need of forceps or vacuum).  I chose to have an elective c-section.  My recovery from the c-section was not easy, but the SPD pain went away within a few weeks and was immediately so much better. See what your doctor says and listen to your body.  Good luck!

    Thank you so much! Yes - I can barely move or roll over in bed without feeling like someonne is kicking me or sharp shooting pains down my thigh/groin and vaginal area. It's awful.  Going to talk to my doctor next week about it. I'm nervous about having a c-section over this, but have been very comforted by seeing all the positive threads here.  Thank you!!

    That's really good to know.  I'm not tempted to have a c-section - I would like to have a vaginal delivery, if possible, but also want to prepare myself mentally if the Doc says I should have a c-section. I guess, I"m just trying to be 'okay' with it.

    You say you had 2 pregnancies with SPD? Were both with c-sections?

    Yes.  This is my 2nd child.  With my first (in 2009), my SPD went undiagnosed.  I needed assistance to walk the last 4 weeks of my preganancy (I used crutches).  I had a vaginal delivery and the baby got stuck in the birth canal.  I ended up "pushing" for 2 hours.  They finally used the vacuum to get her out and them doing that caused a fracture to my tailbone.  Fast forward to this pregnancy...I am currently 34 weeks and have been suffering with SPD this pregnancy as well.  At least this time, my doctor diagnosed it fairly early.  I was pulled from work at 31 weeks and am having a c-section because of the issues I had with baby #1.  My doctor said that if you suffer from SPD, you will most likely suffer from it with every future pregnancy as well.  This is definitely my last child.  I understand your pain.  I hate to tell you, but it gets worse the bigger the baby gets.  We're scheduling the c-section for as early as possible (around 38 weeks).  The only good part is that it really does go away fairly soon after delivery.  You will notice a HUGE difference within just a few days.  I was still in pain, but that was mostly due to the fractured tailbone.  Just listen to your body and take it easy.  I find sleeping on the couch much more comfortable because it keeps me from moving around as much.  Good luck!!
