Natural Birth

If you've taken HypnoBirthing classes/had a HypnoBirth...

My husband and I took HypnoBirthing classes 4.5 years ago when I was pregnant with my son.  I will be 35 weeks on Wednesday and plan to have another HypnoBirth with this baby.  I feel that I have a good grasp of the basics, so I decided to do the refresher stuff on my own (instead of taking classes again).  I have been listening to the affirmations/Rainbow Relaxation and re-read Marie Mongan's book.

The one thing that I'm having trouble remembering - and there is hardly any info about in the book - is Birth Breathing.  I have been on the HypnoBirthing website, YouTube, etc. and am unable to find any kind of videos or description on how to properly do it.  Does anyone have any pointers, or can you point me in the direction of some good info on how to do this?

The woman who taught our classes previously is no longer doing it.  I did look into taking a refresher course, specifically to go over Birth Breathing, with a different provider, but they are either pretty far away or have practically no availability before the first week of July, which will be too late (I'm due July 18th).

Thanks so much for any info!

  •  Wasn't ready for my unplanned early birth but as long as hubby had me remember to breathe all was well. Don't sweat it and good luck!

  • I don't have any pointers (FTM), but wanted to share this link with you that I found to have a few useful resources

    https://www.babycoach.co.uk/Assets/documents/Baby Coach_HB Parent Manual_v2.pdf

Also, on page 249 of Mongan's book, she discusses Birth Breathing a bit.

    Good luck!

  • I tried to use 'Birth Breathing' while I was in labor with DD and it didn't work for me (I love Hypnobirthing though and found it very effective, just not this piece).  I found I either had to relax through the surges or all out push.  So I know I'm not an expert.

I know my instructor said that it is best to practice Birth Breathing when you are having a BM.  So it's basically breathing while bearing down, but not straining or holding your breath for an inordinate amount of time.  That's all I remember about it, sorry I'm not more help!

This was true for me too. I had a really fast, intense labor, and by the time I got to pushing I was not the poster child of HypnoBirthing. We didn't practice birth breathing in class, she just talked about it. So I don't feel like I was really prepared to deal with the overwhelming urge to push (my body pretty much took over and pushed on it's own). I did like visualizing the air going down through my body like a J to push the baby out though, when I practiced at home. Good luck!

  • birth breathing is actually the simplest of all the breathing techniques in HypnoBirthing, and you can see it work in practice (like calm breathing, OP - in your book that would be sleep breathing, the terminology has changed but the book hasn't been updated). however, it remains the number one technique i hear people say they had difficulty with.

to properly do birth breathing, take a quick breath in through your nose (all HB breathing techniques are in and out through the nose), see your breath going to the back of your throat, then down your core to your baby. send your energy and thoughts with it. see your breath scoop your baby up and out of your vagina in the slanted J shape. as you are doing this, your body is going to naturally exhale, but your thoughts and focus will be on moving that breath downward, so you may not even be aware that you are exhaling. there is no counting with birth breathing, breath in and out to your comfort.

when i practiced on the toilet, i noticed that i could move my BMs faster if i "pushed" them out, but breathing them down and out was much more gentle. this is to say, don't be frustrated if you can push faster than you can breathe your baby down. breathing him/her down is a more gentle birthing and you will be less likely to tear, as you are giving your perineum plenty of time to stretch and unfold.

while you are birth breathing, you will remain in an amnesiac state, connecting wtih your baby, talking with your baby. visualizations you might do while birth breathing include: seeing your baby moving down the birth path, opening blossom, blue satin ribbons. as you feel appropriate, you may also give yoru baby gentle nudges, but the rest of yoru body should remain in the "lucy limp" state.

  • im a hypnobirthing teacher- basically it means go with your body & its instincts to push. don't let anyone force you to push & hold it for 10 seconds. its a lot of "blowing" during the pushing phase, but honestly- i am also a midwife & i tell my natural ladies to bear down anyway. you can blow all day but until you go with your bodys urge to push & work with it, you'll just be holding your little one in.
