How do you do this in winter?

So its days like today that make me fear Missouri winters!  We've been to the swimming pool and we'll do the park after nap.  Its seems like being outside allows her to channel her energy and reduce tantrums (not eliminated).

What do you do to wear out your oldest during the winter time?  Are there some toys I should be investing in?  Other ideas?

  • Play area at the mall, bounce house places, indoor playground places etc. We also do things like the library and B&N (they have a train table) because just getting out of the house can be enough sometimes.

Around here it's actually the summer when we have a problem. It's too hot to be outside for long, and definitely not to run around much. So there are a bunch of indoor play areas around. Children's museum is nice too.

  • This may sound silly to some but it does get energy out on rainy days, winter etc. But I will turn on Pandora..Greg and Steve, We will march around the ottoman, play follow the leader, we swing our arms, play instruments, and yes we RUN in the house. She follows me or I follow her. She LOVES it.

And it does burn a few calories. :) Extra bonus

We play Getcha Getcha (essentially tag or chase that starts with me singing a silly song I made up).  And we spend a lot of time at Target.  This past winter in Chicago was relatively mild so we actually spent time at the park in January (it was in the 40's and sunny).
  • We have a children's museum close that we're members to so we do that a few days a week. We also do story time at the library and there's a cool library about 20 minutes away with a huge play area as well. The days that it's above 35 degrees (and not super windy) we still go do things outside. The zoo is open year round here and we still go to the playground as well.

  • Mine were 1 and 2 last winter, and we lived in Russia at the time, so it got cold.  We did go outside as often as we could - it is a pain to bundle them up and down but it does kill some of the time in those long, gray days.

My girls really enjoyed "cooking" with snow.  I made little squeeze bottles of colored water and gave them plastic bowls of snow and spoons to play with.  We did this both outside and inside.  We also did lots of crafts (mostly during #1's nap, but sometimes we did things she could do, too). DD1 also helped me bake a lot.

We had an indoor gym nearby where DD1 could run around, so we did that a lot too.  If you don't have something like that, maybe put on music and dance together?

  • We still go outside in the winter. If it's too cold, we'll maybe go to the mall, hit McDonald's... But with the proper gear, you can go out just about everyday. You can go sledding, build a snow man... we even hit the playground on a regular basis in the winter. I promise you, you will find a way :D

I found a great website that lists children's events in my area. Go to macaronikid.com and search for your city's site. It lists events at the library, zoo, local museums, etc for each day.  It also tells you what age range the activity is ideal for.

My first winter with 2u2 was very snowy and cold.  There was no playground for us!  We went to Little Gym and Music Together one day a week each.  We also joined an indoor play area that was set up at a local church in our town - it was open 2 days a week, so we would go there often.  We tried out some indoor playgrounds, and found local libraries with story times or music shows.  We had a nanny 2 days a week, ans she would take them to the Aquarium, Science Museum, or set up playdates.  It takes more planning (and more $) in the winter, but it is possible to keep them occupied!
