How to get a faster, less messy latch?

My LO had trouble latching because of sleepyness at first, but she got through that and has since latched great. NOW however, she has decided for the past few days she wants to play before she actually decides to latch. She'll open her mouth but only slightly, rub her head back and forth, latch on for a few seconds then spit everything out, wiggle her tongue around, everything except latch properly. Meanwhile I'm leaking like crazy and I have to change all the time because I soak through receiving blankets trying to keep myself clean but usually both her and I end up covered in bm!

Needless to say I am becoming a hermit because I dread having to feed her in public now! How can I get her to latch on faster? I have tried waiting until she is basically hysterical with hunger munching on her hands and fussing before I even attempt to feed her but still the same result. Help me! I am tired of smelling like spoiled milk. -_-

  • My LO does this as well.  I find it funny.  It really all depends how serious he is about eating that time.  Sometimes he goes right to town, other times he plays first.  I bought cloth diapers and use those to tuck under my breast to keep from getting milk on my clothes, since they are thicker then regular burp rags.  It seems to work for us.  And he only really gets milk on his face which I just wipe off periodically while he is eatingurping.  Not much help I know, but know that other LOs do the same thing. :)

  • LO is probably experimenting with what they can and cannot do while feeding.  I can understand how frustrating it is when they are trying to play while you're dripping milk.  My DS used to do the same thing.  What I had to do with him was hold the back of his head still with my thumb and middle finger.  Once he got on there, I had to hold him there.  I made sure he could still breath, and he didn't like it, but it's what I had to do to teach him to stay latched while feeding.

  • Glad you asked - DD does it too, especially if she's just waking up. We get milk everywhere!!

I've tried this too but I feel bad because she gets very upset at me holding her there and she struggles against me. :(
