Anger mgmt tools?

Anyone have any tools that they use to help their child deal with anger issues? My 3 year old has been super angry lately, and I am trying to help him do things other than throw things and tantrum in his room. Any suggestions?

Yoga. There are several yoga books for kids as well as DVDs. Doing Yoga especially the breathing part has helped our LO with her anger.

  • Giving them the words to express themselves helps in the long run.

Creating a safe place to go and calm down with some comfort items there helps too.  It's not TO, just a place to chill.

  • I've been trying to show DD how to calm herself down - so she can use it if she's upset/sad or mad - we just do a very simple "Take a deep breath, now count to 3"  OK - now, let's solve X or let it go or whatever is appropriate.  Sometimes if she's sad/upset w/ do a cuddle WHILE she's taking a deep breath and counting.  If she's just mad (especially at me) with both do it together.  I have to prompt her to do it, but she'll do it once I suggest it - she loves to count so that helps too.

  • We got a video from the library called something like "all little monsters get angry". It gave a visual to signs of nag (face feels hot, tummy turns, heart pounds etc) and a list of things a monster can do to feel better (breathe deeply, think around the problem, find a soft place and close yor eyes). Ds has really taken it to heart and I can ask him if he is starting to feel angry, which method he wants to use or if he is already flippingout I can tell him to take a deep breathe and he will. He is on the autism spectrum so these were tough lessons for him.
