How do you feel about hotdogs for LOs?

With all the talk about nitrates lately, do you / will you still give LO hotdogs? I just bought a pack of chicken hotdogs and I'm seriously considering giving her 1 for dinner. Obviously they won't be a staple in her meals, but I don't see the harm in her having a hotdog once in a while.

  • I don't see a problem with DS having them once in awhile.  I think he's had two of them before and he loved them.  He doesn't get them often, so I'm not too concerned.

  • We now buy nitrate and nitrite free hotdogs.  Yes, we would give them to him.  If we were somewhere that had hotdogs (like a picnic) I would give LO one.  He had chicken nuggets at daycare today.  We don't buy them for home.  But, they have them once a month at daycare.  He can have a nugget once a month.  He also has hotdog at daycare.  I have no idea what type they buy.  Everything else is fresh and organic.  So, I assume they are half way decent and leave it at that.

  • I rarely buy hotdogs but sometimes we have them around the bonfire or at a family picnic.

My FIL loves hotdogs, and I'm pretty sure LO gets some everytime she goes over.

Whatever...she doesn't get enough of any one thing for it to matter to me.

And around here, they're the all beef, nitrate free hotdogs anyways (the farmer's daughter and farmer's wife here...we don't do low rent meat...lol).

This exactly. DD had some of one at a picnic, and it was NBD to me.

  • I fully believe that all food can be consumed in moderation so both kids get hot dogs on occasion.  Last weekend DS even got two of them!  As long as the rest of their diet is well balanced a treat of a hot dog, chicken nugget, or potato chips occasionally isn't going to hurt them IMO.

  • Haha, these are on my NO list, only b/c I think they are gross.  So she may have them in her lifetime, but I sure am not going to buy them.  :-)

  • Hot dogs are one of the few foods that LO has not tried yet. I don't know if it is pregnancy, but the idea of a hot dog right now completely turns my stomach. I will not be going out of my way to buy them anytime soon. However, if we are at a cookout, ball game, etc, I do not have a problem with LO trying one.

I feel the same way about things like bologna. I will NEVER EVER EVER buy bologna because I think that it is the most disgusting thing on the planet, but if LO tries it somewhere else, I will not care.

OH I agree! Bologna is so disgusting. My brother loves it, and I remember the smell just making me gag growing up. Blech. Yeah Lena can eat, but she won't be getting it from me. Maybe Uncle Matt will let her try some ;)

  • Not a fan. I want to keep her away from low-nutrition "toddler foods" as long as possible. No chicken nuggets either. There's a reason kids start to prefer these things and refuse real food, so I'm just keeping that possibility off the table.

  • I won't feed them to her.  I never buy hotdogs as they make me gag!  I'm sure she will have them sometime in the near future but it won't be from me.
  • I buy them, and she loves them. She also likes chicken nuggets. I see no problem with her having these things, and I don't think it will cause her to have poor eating habits in the future. As much as she loves these, as well as a few other "toddler staples," she also loves carrots, salmon, black beans, crab, falafel, etc.

  • Only if I get one too. Hot dogs, like soda, and other "party" food shouldn't be consumed 3x/day. Fine in moderation.

But, I'm a bit of a hot dog snob. Nathan's or some nice polish dogs are more my style. I just bought a pack of mango and jalape?o sausages at Costco yesterday. I had one his morning. And I'm KUed!!11! It was delish.

Exactly, it's quick and easy for lunch and as long as they have other healthy things through out the day, I don't see the big deal. I personally hate hotdogs, but my kids love them. You can also buy better quality/nutritious hotdogs/chicken nuggets too.

And I'd rather my kids have chicken nuggets over the Chef Bororde can stuff or Lunchables, those things are so gross

And I will never buy pre-made PB&J sandwiches  think they are called Uncrustables maybe? Or I could be making that up. But really how much time and effort does it take to slap some peanut butter and jelly on two pieces of bread?  Actually I will also never buy the jar of PB&J either.

  • I think they're ok once in a while. DD has never had one and probably wont for a long time, just not something we buy.

  • I just started giving my 4 year old hot dogs (not every day). I buy the Natural Selects- no funky preservatives in them. That's also the only deli meat I buy for him.

    I love HOT DOGS!!!!!
