How much did you use your glider?

I am curious how much use you got out of your glider, if it was in lo's nursery.  In trying out several gliders, of course the most comfy ones are the most expensive.  I am eyeing $900 one right now.  That seems like a lot of money to spend on a chair that I will only use for a few years.  But if you ladies tell me I will be spending hours and hours in this thing every day, I would probably go for it!

Re: How much did you use your glider?

  • I use mine for practically every feeding, but I think it is absolutely ridiculous to spend $900 on one piece of furniture.  I got a Graco one online that was about $150 & even that, IMO, was a bit too much to spend.  I'd get a mid-priced one if I were you & toss that money at something else you'll need...  like diapers.

  • we have a shermag from BRU and still use it every day after 3 years.  I have even used it myself to relax, read, chill out...  That chair is so comfy!  I am actually nervous about DDs reaction when we move it to tge nursery, because she uses it too.  900 is a lot but we definitely did get our money worth (300 tops including the gliding ottoman)

  • I bought a Best chair that rocks & swivels, and a matching rocking ottoman.  I use it Every Single Day.  I used it TONS when LO was a baby & we were BF.  Now that she's older, we sit in it every night for her bedtime bottle, and then rock & cuddle for a few minutes after before I put her to bed - its my favorite time of day!  I plan for this to be our bedtime story chair, and then if we ever outgrow that, the chair is comfy & fashionable enough to move to the living room (it just looks like a nice club chair).  It was probably in the $600 ballpark for both the chair & ottoman.

Edit:  Add that before LO was STTN, I spent a LOT of my overnight hours cuddling/nursing her in that chair. I moved her from our room to the nursery around 2 weeks old.

  • I will be the odd one out here. We didn't get much use out of the glider. When I fed LO at night I would sit on our bed. We did get a little bit more use out of it once we moved it from the nursery to the living room. We paid $100 for ours on Craigslist, so I'm glad I didn't spend more than that.

  • Ours wasn't quite that expensive, it was around $500 I think, but I use it 2-3 times a day still, and used it even more when he was smaller and woke up during the night. I can't imagine not having it.

  • We have a rocking chair...but a chair is a chair...right?

I insisted the chair of my dreams was a must (it really annoyed DH). I felt regret over it in the beginning. DS slept in our room at first, then he was a super baby to put to sleep when he did go to his crib. Honestly, DS is 5 months old and I didn't really use it until last month. Now he's teething and crabby and the rocking (or gliding) is the only thing that helps. It's our only chair in the house that gives motion like that and we spend so much time in it.

I'm really glad I got the chair I liked. It's solid and will hold up through future children and it matches our home well. I completely intend on keeping it even after I don't have babies anymore.

If you like it, and you think it will hold up and will be worth the money I'd go for it. IMO $900 seems really crazy. But we all have priorities and know our budgets.  Bottom line---get a chair you like so you're not aggravated each time you sit in it (because some of us I'm sure are in theirs FOREVER). But I think if I were to spend that much money I'd plan to use it longer than a few years (like make it a normal piece of furniture after babies).

  • We never bought an actual "glider" we have a recliner that rocks which was in our office, we moved it to the nursery after DS was born.  I honestly can't imagine not having a chair in the house that rocks, we use it all the time.  Whether or not you need an actual glider, I have no idea since I dont know what the technical difference is.  I will say, if you get something, make sure it has padded arms, it's much more comforatble

  • Have you looked at used ones?  LO isn't here yet but I LOVE mine that I got for $85 from a friend on facebook.  You may want to check out craigslist or local consignment shops.

  • We have used ours every single day for the past 14 months.  In the early months, I felt like I sat in it all day long.  I think it really depends on where you plan to spend your time, feed your baby, etc.  A glider isn't necessary, but we used it a ton.

We didn't spend nearly that much though.  We spent under $200 at Target to get the color we wanted and knew it wouldn't last forever.  After a year of heavy use it still looks great.  At $900 I'd make sure it was multi-functional.  Could it go into another bedroom, family room, or somewhere else when you are done with it in the nursery?

  • My son just turned 2 and I still use it daily. I got a nice one that can be moved into a playroom or family room when we need more room in his nrusery.  I think I paid around $700 for it and NO regrets.  Even at 2, we still read a book or two each night in it and when he wakes up on rare occassion in middle of night (teething, sick, etc...) I am so glad I have this since he wants to lay on me!  I even sit on it sometimes when I am putting lotion on my own body- ha ha.  I do not think $900 is a lot for a piece of furniture you can use for several years and they also have resell value especially if it is a high end brand.

Wait, seriously, $900? Are you sh!tting me? Not worth it. Nope. Not even if you sat in it hours a day... still.not.worth.it.

We never used ours. I've MAYBE used it 3 times.

  • We picked a best reclining glider, the plan is to use it for this and any future children and then move it to our 'library' so it can be our reading chair.

  • I got a used glider on Craigslist for $30. Used it every day and still like to use it to read.

  • I have used my glider every single day and I still use it read him books and rock when he is sick.

But there is no way in he!! I would pay 900 for one.  I got mine brand new off of craigslist for 80.  It was orginally 150 from Target.

Works great and still looks brand new!

  • We just bought a really nice leather recliner at Costco. It was $400 but we've looked enough to know it was a good deal. It's multifunctional. DH is in it now. I did not want a nursery glider that would look weird in any other room. We didn't have it for DS and survived but I would have used it a TON.  DS was colicky and had to be held all of the time. I slept on the couch with him for months, which wasn't ideal.  I probably would have loved it at the end of pregnancy, too. I honestly just couldn't find what I was looking for until now and I'm glad I'll have it this time. That said, no way in hell would I spend $900 on a glider.

  • We rarely use(d) our glider.  I almost always nurse in the master bedroom, especially in the early days as DD slept in a bassinet in our room for the first few months.  It sounds like lots of moms got a ton of use out of theirs, so I guess it just depends what your preference is.  Ours is a nice addition to the nursery, but not essential.  We have a shermag and paid around $500 for it.

  • I wouldn't have survived these 8 months without my glider.  I got a handmade Amish one and I am embarrassed to say how expensive it was... But for us, I cannot say how important our glider is!

  • I knew I didn't want to be confined to LO's room so I bought one as a piece of living room furnature.  I made sure it matched the decor and tried several to find one that was comfortable and that "fit" me (I have short legs and often times my feet don't touch the floor when sitting in recliners or on sofas).  We paid around $500 for the glider and ottoman and I use them every day (some days I feel like I'm sitting in it all day).

If you like the chair and think you'll use it past the baby stage then go for it.  It's your money, spend it how you'd like (we bought a $700 travel system).

  • Our glider was the most expensive thing we purchased for our LO, and I don't regret the decision.  We use it every day and it still looks and feels brand new.  It glides with almost zero effort and looks nice enough that I wouldn't think twice about putting in out living room when we're done having kids, especially now that I am addicted to rocking!

  • I never bought a glider or a rocking chair. I just moved one of our loveseats into the nursery and that was good enough. My one hesitation about "nice" baby furniture is that I didn't realize how messy newborns are. Between leaking breast milk and DD spitting up after every feeding -- I'm glad I was able to trash the loveseat by the time she turned one and redecorate!

  • I use my rocker everyday for nite feeding and story time...I didn't feel confortable paying a lot of money for mine but if you got the money to spend on the rocker you love then do it...

But i did notice that depending on where your baby will be sleeping will determine how much you use it...it's not really convinent to go in the nursery to rock the baby if she/he is sleeping in your bedroom.

  • A comfy chair that rocks or glides is a most. I love my glider and ottoman, bc it's attractive and doesn't look like a true glider or rocker. It will go well in an older child's nursery or in the master bedroom sitting area later. That being said, if I had to do it again, I would buy a big comfy rocking recliner next time. I would have loved that for the end of pregnancy and the nights I've spent sleeping in the glider during the newborn period.

  • I think $900 is crazy, but I did go way above budget on our's because of the comfort factor.  I don't like the traditional wooden ones with the pads bc they are not very comfortable.  We went with one by Best Chairs and I love it!  It is super comfy and it doesn't look like a baby nursery glider--just like a regular chair.  We got it in a light tan color so we can use it in future nurseries and then once we get to the point where we don't have babies anymore, we can just use it as a regular chair somewhere in the house.  That is at least how we justified going over budget.

I use it every night now (I didn't for the first few months bc she was in our room) and sometimes before or after naps.

  • I used the glider a ton in the beginning (first three months), for nursing while sitting up, or reclined with DD on top of me.

I don't use it nearly as much now (as far as time spent in it), but I would go so far as to say that I use it every day.  If I don't nurse baby in bed prior to putting her to bed, I nurse her in the glider.

We bought the Monte Grano (google the cost at your own risk).  It was way, way more than I wanted to spend, but because space is at a premium in DD's bedroom, it was on of the few glider/recliners that fit with our design aesthetic and space limitations.  That said, we think it's a nice looking chair and anticipate on using it for many more years, whether in the living room or in DD's room.  I think it is more comfortable than almost all the other gliders we tried out except for maybe this one dutailier that was like floating on clouds.  That one was way too wide for baby's room though.  We didn't find the wooden gliders comfortable or suitable with how baby's room is decorated.
