3rd Trimester

29 weeks in the ER and sent to L&D...

We are on vacation and I woke up crying last night with some really bad pain. I time them but they weren't consistent.  So I woke up and was fine I was able to get ready and have a little something for breakfast. About 11 o'clock I called my on back at home(5 hours away) which he suggested going to the local ER. So I'm here and everything was fine until about 15 minutes ago the contractions starte again. The nurse didn't seem to be concerned and I still haven't seen a dr. Has this happens to anyone else? What was the out come?? My little baby has to keep growing until August!!

Re: 29 weeks in the ER and sent to L&D...

  • It'll be okay....have they checked your cervix to see if those contractions are making changes?  Are you dehydrated and need IV fluids?  Are you on IV fluids right now?

There are many many medicines that can be used to slow/stop contractions in the hospital to stop labor and then you can take oral medicine at home to control them.  Just try to keep calm until the doctor comes in to talk to you.

I went into labor (true labor with cervical changes) a few times with DS's pregnancy and I made it to 37 weeks with him.

    It's going to be okay!

  • This happened to me at 26 weeks.  I was dehydrated and constipated.  I was on bed rest for a week and actually went back to L&D a couple of times because the pains were so bad.  But the more I rested and drank a lot (my dr now wants me drinking 120 oz a day!), the better I felt. I've been back at work for a week and a half now and no problems.

I was on vacation when mine started as well.  Were you somewhere warmer than where you live? My dr said that was part of the problem, it was 95 degrees where I was vacationing and I wasn't upping my water to accommodate the extra need.

I've been there, its scary. But stay as calm as you can and relax as much as you can, that's the best thing you can do for you and baby!

  • I have had water the entire time I've been in here.  They don't have me on an IV which I thought was a little odd. She just barely checked me and said that my cervix is still closed but i am thinning out.

  • Did they do the swab test on you where they swab you to see if you show signs of premature labor?  That test is usually a good predictor of the next 2 weeks, so they can check to see if it looks like you have any signs of premature labor that way as well.

I felt like they were drowning me in water when I was in L&D.  But I swear the water saved me from the pains.

Also, I was told some of my pains weren't contractions (some were).  Some were just "irritability" which is what they called them.  Basically my uterus was upset with me.  They timed them out and they were all really short (less than 30 seconds) and barely registered on their monitors.   Have you asked if they are definite full on contractions?

    Good luck!

  • I was released te contractions stopped after lots of juice and water. They were full on contractions and some would last a long time and othera were just tiny to where they would hardly go on the monitor. Im headed home so that if I need any further care I can just see my doctor. They didn't do any blood work or any swabs to check me. It was only like 30 minutes without contractions and they released me.
  • Sorry girl. This happened to me at 24 weeks. Turned out I was severely dehydrated and had 2 kidney stones.

The nurse did say my cervix is starting to thin but my cervix is still closed and I'm not dialatibg? So in going to bring this up at my dr app thursday.
