Do you give LO raspberries (the food)?

My in laws watched DD on Wed and Thurs. They have a raspberry bush in their back yard and said they gave her one each day and she loved it.  She has only had raspberries once when it was in an organic babyfood jar with other fruits and that was probably a couple months ago.and probably only had a couple bites

First of all, it makes me upset that they gave her food without knowing whether she has had it before. I had told them the Dr said anything goes except fish and honey but that doesnt mean I want them to introduce new foods..then, I specifically told them to only give her food we bring or say is ok.

Anyways, do you think its ok for her to have? do you give raspberries to your LO?

  • I give DD raspberriers all the time, she loves them. I understand being upset that they didnt ask first. but at least they were giving her fruit and not junk food.

This. They may not have realized that you haven't given her raspberries yet if her diet is quite varied now.

  • Thanks ladies!!

  • I agree that they may not have known that you haven't give her raspberries.  My parents also have raspberry bushes and it's a treat for them to share the fresh berries with all their granddaughters.  The girls who can talk ask about them ("When can we go to Nana's house and pick Papa's raspberries?!?").  My LO hasn't had them yet, but that's only b/c I can't stomach paying $5 for a little pint of them, when I can get bowlfuls at my parents' house for free, haha!  I think your parents were just sharing with your LO, it may develop into a great treasured memory for your LO.

  • Yep. LO has had most every fruit under the sun.

I know you're worried about allergies, but honestly, relax a little. There is no way and it's not fair to expect everyone else to remember every little thing your kid has or hasn't had. As long as common sense is applied and the most common allergens avoided if it bothers you, that's good enough.

  • She's had them in purees and I gave them to her whole a few days ago.  She had a weird reaction to them- rash all over her face and mouth where she'd mashed them on her skin.  I'm assuming the reaction was due to the acid in the berries and not an allergy- no rash anywhere else, and it went away once i washed her face off well.

This.  We have to avoid dairy with DS and we avoid raw honey per our pediatrician, but anything else is perfectly reasonable, even if I am not the one to give it to him for the first time.  Of course, my first was in daycare and I had no problem with them introducing new foods either.

  • We've done raspberries here too and he loved them.

And I personally wouldn't care if someone gave my kid something before I did. My parents have done it when they watch the boys. It's kind of comes with the perks of being a grandparent I think. You get to spoil them. As long as they don't give my kids soda I'm good! There's no need for anyone to have soda ever or aspartame .

  • You really need to relax a bit. Unless you're providing them with a list of every food she's ever eaten, with strict instructions (which is a bit absurd with no history of food allergies), they're not going to remember every little thing.

I've blended raspberries into homemade applesauce, but I haven't given them to her whole. Mainly because the seeds bother the crap out of me when I eat them, so I never have the on hand.

  • Yes! They are ridiculously cheap right now ($1 container), so he eats about half a container a day! He loves them!

Agree with PP, if your child hasn't had any issues with allergies you can't expect to always be the first person to introduce foods. My parents and day care lady know the foods (honey, peanut butter) I won't allow DS to have yet, but other than that they can give him whatever they want.

  • DD loves them and I wouldn't be worried about your parents giving LO some fruit - especially if it was one raspberry a day.  What you need to worry about is when your kid comes home from spending a night with them and has a different hair style than what you left her with....YEP, my MIL cut DD#1's hair and gave her bangs when she was almost 1 without asking.  I was livid!!
